GtkTreeView

I began writing a tutorial on using GtkTreeView. Jonathan said the documentation could use some help, so I might see if there is something I can do there to be of use.

Hunger

    I’m really hungry right now.

Amirosh

My friend Amirosh was in D.C. while on tour with Yo-Yo Ma, so I went to go see him on Thursday. He offered to get me some free tickets to their concert today, but I was unable to go because we had an orchestra concert tonight. It was cool to see him.

Orchestra concert

It wasn’t so great. I really enjoyed playing the Mahler, of course, but I was a little annoyed by the cluelessness of some of the performers. The end is supposed to have two harps, plus basses. The conductor cut one of the harps out because both of them are never in tune with one another. Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough because the one harp remaining was so out of tune that one of her strings was like a quarter tone flat. So she just keeps playing, when she should have had the other one play instead.

Ludwig van

I got it completely shifted over to Gnome 2.0 libraries. I’m so blown away by how fucking cool Jonathan’s GtkTreeView widget is. It’s incredible! I started writing a new tutorial on how to use it, but my knowledge of it is not very in-depth yet so my tutorial will probably suck. Anyway, I’m definitely going to discontinue all work on Ludwig van using Gnome 1.0 libraries and move HEAD development to 2.0 very soon. Screenshots will be posted very soon using Gnome 2.0 libraries!

Practice

Changing bow technique is so difficult!

No net connection again..

That’s the bad news, but the good news is that I moved to a new apartment. This is very great news! No more noisy dumpster, plus I have a bed now!

Hacking

I’ve been moving Ludwig van over to GTK 2.0 and Gnome 2.0 code in the past couple days. The Gnome 2.0 libraries are much more usable now than they were a few months ago. Right now I’m having a little difficulty with moving all my ETree code to GtkTreeView, but everything else is done.

I made some nice changes to this dialog. Compare This new screenshot against this old screenshot.

Paganini

General Comments Off

I saw some cheesy VHS tape last night with Alexander Markov playing 24 Paganini Caprices. The performance was really cool, but I think the true greatness of this was the video editing. They did lots of unnecessary zooms, cuts, shots of shadows, shots of boring audience members, and weird mirror effects. You’d see Markov playing, then a little round spot showing his left hand would open up on a corner of the screen, then another would open in another corner of the screen, then another, and another. They would all be focused on his left hand from different angles, and if we were lucky one or two would be in slow-motion, just in case you want to steal Markov’s fingerings! One part showed three or four images of Markov; one was the original, and each next one was smaller. It reminds me of those little toys that you can open up and each contains a copy of the larger one, only in this case each one was playing a Paganini caprice. I also think that the fact that the audio/video were not synchronized certainly added a little charm to it!

Naming schemes

General Comments Off
Anyone else getting sick of naming schemes that start with K, G, X, or whatever? We need better names. For example, KWord is really lame. GWord would be a really weak name for a Gnome word processor, however, Word Up G would be an interesting twist on the G naming scheme. Similarly, while GnuCash is not as bad as GCash, wouldn’t GMoney be a better name?

Today in Baltimore

Today some guy asked me if he could help me carry my viola case. It would be no trouble at all, and I looked a little tired of carrying it he thought.

    How stupid do I look??
