Carolyn has been here this week, which was really cool. She’s leaving tonight, so we just went out for tea and dessert. We went to Donna’s and got their chocolate mousse cake thingy. I got some green tea and Carolyn got some other sort of sweet tea.. I forgot what it was called, which is surprising after the interrogation that Carolyn gave the waitress about this tea before she ordered it. It ended up having a pretty nice smell to it, and tasted good.

There’s something about Donna’s, though. When you leave Donna’s, you still smell it everywhere you go. And you smell like Donna’s for awhile. It’s hard to say exactly what Donna’s smells like; Carolyn thought it was a cross between pizza and coffee. I disagree, but I can’t think of anything else either exactly. But I can still smell Donna’s in my shirt right now. It doesn’t smell bad while you’re there, but it certainly doesn’t smell good on your clothes when you leave.

Val is here today also, but she’s leaving pretty early tomorrow. She’s here for an audition at Peabody. She’s getting ready for that, so there’s not really much time for hanging out tonight. We’re going to get together next time she’s here, which she said should be pretty soon.

I’m serious. I think she can read minds or something. It’s sort of scary. I was talking to her earlier and she was guessing stuff that I didn’t think she should be able to guess. Crazy.

It’s great talking to her still, though. Lesley is awesome.

Keeping my hands warm with C++ code

I always feel really cold at my office. Even now during the winter while it’s snowing outside, our air conditioners come on. I guess the office would get sort of warm with all the computers here or something, but when air conditioning comes on during the winter, I get cold. Especially my fingers and my hands. What do I do to warm them up?

Another thing we have at my company is a plugin for Visual Studio called IncrediBuild. It distributes builds across the network so that all the computers in the office will compile your code. It’s like distcc, but for Visual C++.

This really comes in handy to help my cold fingers. Whenever I get too cold, I do an often extremely unnecessary clean and rebuild of the entire project. This kicks the laptop on the left side of my desk into action, and with the extra workload its fans come on and start pumping out lots of heat through the vent on its right side. I just put my fingers up next to the vent. It’s wonderful.
