I also saw the original in the early 80s - I was about 12 at the time, and absolutely loved the whole thing - the music, the effects, the science, and the enduring sense of awe at learning how insignificant our existance is (on a universal scale, if you know what I mean). Anyway, I too got hold of the series again, about 3 months ago, and throughly enjoyed seeing the whole thing again - it's aged very slightly, but it's still fantastic.
