Add these lines to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file:
     Option "UseFBDev" "false"
Option "MergedFB" "true"
Option "CRT2Position" "RightOf"
/etc/init.d/gdm restart
And you should be good to go with dual-head on your powerbook. This works great for me.
-kyle

Cool, works (almost) perfectly, except that my monitor doesn't support as high a resolution as my Powerbook, so on the monitor everything's stretched and the whole desktop scrolls when you hit the edges :/ Any idea if it's possible to set the resolution on the second screen independently?

Not to worry, found 'man radeon' now :) Doesn't look like it's easily possible, so I'll just adjust the monitor so things don't look squashed, and live with the scrolling. Thanks again!
