Holiday catchup

So, first blog of 2007… bliadhna mhath ur, and all that.

It was a fairly quiet break for us this year, at least in terms of travelling and seeing family– we did neither, apart from a one-night spa break up the road at the Johnstownhouse Marriot in Enfield. (The food there really is gorgeous.)

We were out and about around town a bit though… went to see Jason Byrne on December 23rd, and we took in Casino Royale, Flushed Away, Happy Feet and Deja Vu at the cinema (mostly for free– thanks Curly!)

Work-wise, I’m trying out a Sun Ray 2 at home for the first time this week… the technology is certainly impressive, although it remains to be seen whether it’ll oust my laptop as my working-at-home tool of choice. It would probably be more useful if I had one on my desk at work as well, to get the full benefit of session mobility– maybe it’s time to retire my old Ultra 10….

  1. Hi Callum,

I was hoping you would be able to shed some light on something for me.

I was reading a lot about the Sun Ray 2s a month or so back, I think they are really snappy bits of hardware. My only concern was the server softare being closed.

I emailed Sun to ask them whether there were plans to open it under a free software license, however I never received a reply.

Do you know of any plans to open source the Sun Ray 2 server software?

    Cheers,

    Tom

  2. I’m not personally aware of any such plans at the moment, but Sun has said publicly many times that it intends to open source all of its software (perhaps even by the end of this calendar year, according to some reports), so one would imagine that the SRS software will be considered a candidate sooner or later.

Of course, as with any of our software, due diligence may throw up issues that would make open source licensing infeasible… but I really don’t have any insight there, and even if I did, our legal department would probably have to shoot me for discussing them here 🙂
