Hi everyone,

For a few days, i’ve been working on packaging properly babl, gegl and gnome-scan for the new PPA launchpad service. Finally, i got a good packaging and a usable version of Gnome Scan. So no packages for 0.5.2, i provide latest SVN version ! Here you are :

  • deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/bersace/ubuntu gutsy universe
  • deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/bersace/ubuntu gutsy universe
  • Update: For debian unstable i386 : deb http://sadleder.de/debian/ ./

Thanks to PPA, packages are available for amd64 too. No powerpc (yet ?) nor GPG signed archive (obviously). Along with the availibility of my PPA, i will remove my archive at bersace03.free.fr . Philip Sadleder still provide a repos for debian based on my own debianization. Thanks Philip !

PPA is just an anti-chambre to universe. I really want to see gnome-scan 0.6 in Hardy for several reasons including :

  • Hardy will be a LTS, so having a decent gnome-scan version is important.
  • There is a blueprint spec “make-xsane-user-friendly“.
  • Since Gnome Scan now follow Gnome Schedule, it will provide 0.6 in time before upstream version freeze.

Also, i wish other distro will update or include gnome-scan. Foresight still provide an outdate version of Gnome Scan (IIRC 0.3.1), i had no news about Fedora (just saw some 0.4 package in Extras), etc.

Anyway, go test it and report bugs ! đŸ˜€

Update: beware, flegita-gimp is known to provoke heavy memleaks if you acquire (preview works).

Cheers !

    There is no powerpc support now [1]

    Why are only x86 and amd64 architectures supported?
    We use the Xen virtualisation system for security during the build process, ensuring that each build has a clean build environment and different developers cannot impact on one another’s builds accidentally. This technology is only available on x86 and amd64.

    Fantastic! I added this to my sources.list đŸ™‚

    On the other hand (and you won’t like to hear this), I just tried to use the Xsane plugin in Gimp again. In fact, I think it is quite good!

    Of course, I shouldn’t compare a fresh product that is under heavy development with something that is solid and old.

    Just a couple of good things about Xsane: the batch scan, the fact that everything works perfectly, etc.

    The bad things about Xsane in Gimp: the fact that there are so many windows, the fact that it does not have Gnome feel, etc.

    Conclusion for flegita: Xsane still has some good ideas that could be worth imitating.

    Of course, in the end flegita will be much better than Xsane đŸ™‚

    I’m already planning to add gnome-scan to Mandriva after we finish the release we’re about to make (2008). I would’ve added it for 2008, but it was just a bit too late during our cycle.

    Michaël,

    Xsane has very good point. It’s a stable and well tested software. However, it does not have Gnome Scan goals :

    * standalone app vs. library
    * portable (win32) vs. Gnome
    * advanced vs. ergonomic
    * image processing vs. generic (image, OCR, vCard, OMR, …)

    Xsane has very good hardware handling (Oliver Rauch has more influence on SANE than me on Gegl) and a lot of features for pure image scanning.

    However, when it comes to integration in, say, AbiWord, Evolution, f-spot … that’s impossible both in term of technical and usability matters. Even integration of Flegita in Gimp is better. Not yet do flegita provide enough features, but expect a additionnal “Processing” tab to appear in the next few weeks ;).

    So, if you find a rocking feature in XSane, don’t hesitate to bug me using Gnome bugzilla ! Explain the behaviour, how you’ll see it in Gnome Scan/Flegita. This will help me a lot.

    Kind regards,
    Étienne.

    The dependence of latest gnome-scan on non-released versions of babl and gegl makes it tough to include it in distros.

    Do you know how gegl progressing? Hopefully the development of gegl/babl is somewhat fast…

    Could you give us an update? Are you still working on this project?

    Hi,

    I’ll update soon. I paused Gnome Scan development due to other projects. I’ll blog in about a week.

    Regards,
