Growing community

Saturday, March 19th, 2005

Had our first logo submission, looks cool.

Jonathon's logo 1

Also, did lots of work on getting udev, hal, and gnome-volume-manager to play well. Looks pretty good, I think.

Lots of other “tweaks” in the distro in general, probably getting close to needing a new release :-)
The Foresight community is really growing, which is really exciting. We have seen a pretty significant increase in traffic to the site and a ton of downloads. Also the mailing list and irc is getting used, as well as real contributions from the community. I want to thank everyone that has helped out… and definately want to encourage the continued contributions and also any new contributors. Thanks!

Project single disk

Thursday, March 10th, 2005

Now that Foresight Desktop is working pretty well, it is time to get it down to one disk. So the plan is to split out the packages into two distros, Server and Desktop. Who needs a database server on there desktop? Well, some people will. The solution is conary… yay!

Conary’s group handling is close to being ready for use. So I will create a number of groups. Maybe something like this:

group-dist - This will contain the core of the distro, things that are shared between both desktop and server
group-desktop - Desktop apps, GNOME, etc..
group-server - Server apps, apache, bind, etc..
group-developer - Lost of development tools

Desktop distro iso will contain group-dist and group-desktop, Server distro will contain group-dist and group-server.

I am sure there will be more, and maybe even some of this will change once I see how the groups work. These are just my initial thoughts.

Another thing I may investigate is hacking firstboot to do additional install work. Maybe the “Addition CD” module can be replaced with a new one that is install additional groups via conary, assuming there is a network connection. It should be a pretty easy hack. A user could select “Developer”, and it would just do a conary update group-developer.

So close

Tuesday, March 8th, 2005

Very close to having all of GNOME 2.10 cooked up, just waiting for tarballs of yelp, eog, and librsvg. So close I can taste it :-)

As soon as they are out I will get them cooked and create new ISOs, 0.5. After the 0.5 release, they will slow down drastically and it should be pretty stable. It will also be easy to keep it updated with the snazzy conary tools.

Beautiful NC Day

Sunday, March 6th, 2005

What a great day….

Weather was perfect, high 60s, sunny, and blue skies. So we took Ashlyn (my 2 year old daughter) to the park in Chapel Hill. She had a blast… it was such a perfect day for the park.

We also took her to see the easter bunny, just to warm her up for the easter portrait we are planning to have done next weekend. Last year was a disaster, she just wanted nothing todo with the easter bunny. So, we thought we would stroll by today and let her see him. She was excited about going, until she saw him. He was great, waved, played peek-a-boo… all the right things… and still, she wanted nothing to do with him. What is it about a guy in a rabbit suit? Next weekend is gonna be painful :-)
