So, just after the Kris‘ keynote presenting the GTK+ 3.0 plans, we, your beloved release team, quickly presented our proposed plan for GNOME 3.0. There are still lots of details to discuss but the important thing is that our proposed mindset for 3.0 is in place for discussion now. It involves a relatively smooth transition from 2.x to 3.x, a more focused and inclusive development process, long-term development cycles, and more. We hope to get some fruitful discussions during GUADEC and to present the plan in a more structured and detailed way to everyone soon.

Thank you so much for helping to keep innovation, audacity and progression alive and well in gnome. I’m just an end user, no coding skills whatsoever, but a grateful and somewhat awed end user.
Excellent! As a user of the GNOME desktop, I can’t wait.

Just hope that the 3x transition will take about the same time as KDEs transition to 4x – both in qt and in libs.

I’ll be waiting anxiously for the plan to be published in the Web.
Please don’t do to GNOME 3.0 what KDE did to KDE 4.0! It’s pretty much unusable and rewriting so much from scratch isn’t usually the best option. Remember Netscape’s mistake.

As a huge Gnome 2 fan, I am somewhat cautious about this. For me, Gnome 2 represented a significant improvement over the Windows XP interface and was one of the things that facilitated my move to Linux.
Please keep the same philosophy that made Gnome 2 great – simple is better.

Can we please have some advanced customization features, those of us who have been using gnome since … well for years and year. We wait, and we wait, we make requests and we are consistently ignored. It’s enough to make one consider KDE 4.1.
I’ve been trying for years to get a patch accepted to turn off the damn close buttons on the gnome terminal tabs, or at least to have a prompt so that one doesn’t accidentally close one’s tab just by switching from one tab to another (something that is easy to do if one has many tabs open). As it stands I have to recompile my own copy of gnome terminal each time I update or reinstall a distro. That the gods for open source. But damn if it isn’t like watching paint dry getting stupid features removed or dealt with properly in gnome. And some of the developers can be downright snarky, especially when dealing with snarky old fsckers like myself. :)

and GNOME 2.40 == GNOME 4.0? What is the logic behind this beside increasing the version-number?
@Tim
I believe the logic behind this is a major technology overhaul ‘underneath the hood’ (ie, the API’s).
