You have to fall back to ‘Generic name ( brand name )’ when another application with an existing generic name is installed, to avoid confusion, of course.

( Novice users, users that want the generic name, often only have a single application per generic name, though. )

Could you post a followup with some *examples* for common app types like

- web browser: Firefox/Epiphany
- media player apps: Rhythmbox/Banshee
- Word processor: OOo Writer/Abiword
- Media sharing app: Tangerine/…

What would the Name/GenricName/FullName for those be?

Nice style!

What about removing the icons from document-items and instead writing in greyish color and smaller size:

PRESENTATION Document 1
TEXT Important Info
EMAIL Some Document
IMAGE Another Document

etc

As the file-icons are cluttered and are too colorful for the rest of the shell-design – imo. just my 2 cents

I think your Tylenol advice is irresponsible. Like many substances such as alcohol, it can certainly be toxic if you exceed the recommended dose. But there is no reason to suggest that it is unsafe in prescribed dosage. It only causes liver damage if you overdose.

Mats Taraldsvik: Replacing e.g Firefox with Web Browser, and gedit with Text Editor is a good idea for new or novice users, but I think this should be a setting.

Yes definitely. And of course there should be also a option like “generic name (brand name)”.

Why? Because you don’t have installed always only one text editor, one web browser, etc and you should be able to differentiate them in the menu.
