Eric, IIRC Ubuntu 7.10 does not have xserver 1.4. So what would be the workaround?

If you don’t have xserver 1.4, the sync polarity swapping is a common cause of issues like yours.

The ghosting shows/disappears under certain settings of brightness/contrast. After endless reading I decided on this model and have to say that it is great (seriously those shortcomings noted everywhere are minor and compared to my other 3 19″ displays this one is superior in ghosting issues/colors by far). Anything better is in a different price category.

The display works fine for me with “nvidia” in Linux.

You should try xcalib to load ICM Profiles for the monitor which gives you calibrated colors.

I’m a happy owner of 2407WFP myself.
Don’t mean to spoil you, but do you experience any issues wrt ghosting?
