Try using the DKMS installer (nvidia-x11-drv) from freshrpms.net instead, quake3 and 4 work fine for me using that driver, also DKMS I have found is far superior than the livna prebuilt kernel drivers as it builds the kernel driver the first time that kernel runs.
Hope this helps.
DKMS apparently came from dell, good work, I suppose they had to do something to make up for the crappy batteries.

The new NVidia drivers have OpenGL problems on some of the older NVidia cards from what I've read. I can't even get glxgears to start on my own system.
It sounds like they are going to be retiring some of the older card support to a legacy line and there's a bit of bugginess around this shuffle.

v9629 has a "known bug which is triggered during
certain types of mode changes while using a DFP". elisa (!) triggered this for me, I am back to v9626. New beta should be fine as well with this respect.
