  • GNOME Foundation Welcomes Holly Million as Executive Director

    We are thrilled to announce a significant milestone for the GNOME Foundation as we welcome Holly Million to our team as the new Executive Director. Holly is a multi-talented individual with a diverse background in nonprofit leadership, filmmaking, teaching, public speaking, and writing. Her commitment to empowering individuals to make a positive impact aligns perfectly with the values and goals of the GNOME Foundation.

    Holly brings three decades of invaluable experience in nonprofit management, having served as a consultant, director of development, executive director, and board member for numerous organizations. Notably, she founded the nonprofit organization Artists United, dedicated to empowering individual artists and fostering collaboration across artistic disciplines for the collective good. Additionally, Holly served as the Executive Director of the BioBricks Foundation, an international, open-source biotechnology nonprofit.

    Holly holds a Master of Arts in Education from Stanford University and a Bachelor of Arts in English from Harvard University. Her academic background, combined with her extensive professional journey, equips her with a unique perspective that will undoubtedly contribute to the growth and success of the GNOME Foundation.

  • GNOME.Asia 2023 Call for Participation

    The GNOME Foundation is pleased to announce that the Call For Participation in GNOME Asia Summit 2023 is now open! This year’s summit will occur from December 1st to 3rd at Kathmandu, Nepal.

    GNOME.Asia is the featured annual GNOME conference in Asia and focuses primarily on the GNOME desktop, applications, and platform development tools. The Summit brings together the GNOME community in Asia to provide a forum for users, developers, foundation leaders, governments, and businesses to discuss current technology and future developments.

    The GNOME Foundation is seeking talks on a variety of topics, including but not limited to:

    • Contributing to GNOME
    • UI design
    • Accessibility
    • Human Interface Engineering (Icons and Graphic Design)
    • Marketing/Engagement
    • Developing GNOME on embedded systems or open hardware
    • Contributing to Linux and FLOSS
    • Linux kernel and development
    • The development and promotion of open-source operating systems
    • Distributions, including Debian, Fedora, openSUSE, Ubuntu, and FreeBSD
    • The development and promotion of other open source projects
    • We are also interested in different topics related to Free/Libre and Open Source Software that are not listed above.

    Sessions will be scheduled for 30 or 50 minutes (Q&A included). The session could be a technical or non-technical talk, panel discussion, workshop, or Birds of a Feather session (BoF).

  • GUADEC 2023 Call for BoFs and Workshops

    We are excited to share the call for Birds-of-a-Feather (BoF) and Workshop submissions for GUADEC 2023! 

    BoF and Workshop spots will be available for one or two-hour blocks on Saturday, July 29, and Sunday, July 30. If you would like to host a BoF or Workshop on either of these days, please apply by filling out this short form. If you submitted a BoF or Workshop proposal during the call for participation, we have already added your request to the conference schedule. The deadline for submitting proposals is June 12.

    GUADEC 2023 will be hosted in two venue locations. BoFs and Workshops will be held at our second venue, Central Building, University of Latvia. To learn more, please visit guadec.org. 

    Please note that BoFs and Workshops will be held in-person and will not be live-streamed. If you are hosting a BoF or Workshop and wish to allow remote attendance, you will have access to our GUADEC BoF rooms on meet.gnome.org. The hosts will be responsible for connecting to the remote conference room using their computers and microphones.

  • GUADEC 2023 Registration is Open!

    We’re thrilled to announce that registration for GUADEC 2023 is now open!

    GUADEC is the largest annual gathering of GNOME developers and community members. This year, we’re excited to welcome everyone in person in the beautiful city of Riga, Latvia, from July 26th to July 31st. But if you can’t make it in person, don’t worry, we’ll also be live-streaming the event so that you can attend remotely.

  • Introducing GNOME 44

    The GNOME Project is proud to announce the release of GNOME 44, ‘Kuala Lumpur’.

    This release brings a grid view in the file chooser, improved settings panels for Device Security, Accessibility, etc, and refined quick settings in the shell. The Software and Files apps have seen improvements, and a whole slew of new apps has joined
    the GNOME Circle.

    GNOME 44 will be available shortly in many distributions, such as Fedora 38 and Ubuntu 23.04. If you want to try it today, you can look for their beta releases, which will be available very soon: Getting GNOME

    We are also providing our own installer images for debugging and testing features. These images are meant for installation in a vm and require GNOME Boxes with UEFI support. We suggest getting Boxes from Flathub. os.gnome.org

    Try the latest and greatest GNOME software in a VM or on real hardware If you are interested in building applications for GNOME 44, look for the GNOME 44 Flatpak SDK, which is available in the Flathub repository.

    This six-month effort wouldn’t have been possible without the whole GNOME community, made of contributors and friends from all around the world: developers, designers, documentation writers, usability and accessibility specialists, translators, maintainers, students, system administrators, companies, artists, testers, the local GNOME Asia team in Malaysia, and last, but not least, our users.

    GNOME would not exist without all of you. Thank you to everyone!

  • Travel Sponsorship Applications Open for GUADEC 2023

    The GNOME Foundation is pleased to announce that travel sponsorship applications for GUADEC 2023 are currently open. GUADEC is the GNOME community’s annual conference, and this year it will be held in Riga, Latvia on July 26-31.

    GUADEC is a great opportunity for developers, designers, and contributors to come together to discuss and learn about the latest developments in the GNOME project. The conference features a variety of talks, workshops, and social events that help foster collaboration and innovation within the GNOME community.

    If you are interested in presenting at or attending GUADEC but require financial assistance to make the trip, you may request support from our travel committee. The deadline* to apply for travel sponsorship is March 31st, so be sure to submit your application as soon as possible.

  • GUADEC 2023 Call for Participation Opens

    The GNOME Foundation is delighted to announce that the call for participation in GUADEC 2023 is now open! You can submit your talk proposal at: https://events.gnome.org/event/101/abstracts/.

    GUADEC is the largest annual GNOME community conference, and it will be held this year in Riga, Latvia, from July 26th-31st. Talks will be streamed online for anyone attending remotely.

    The GNOME Foundation is seeking talks on a variety of topics, including but not limited to:

    • Application development
    • Privacy and security
    • Community and team building
    • Design of user and developer experience
    • Use of GNOME technologies outside the desktop
    • Newcomers initiatives
    • Project planning and governance

    The first three days of the conference, July 26th-28th will be focussed on talks. The following two days, July 29th and 30th will be dedicated to BoFs and workshops. The final day, July 31st will be a fun social event for all who want to join us!

    The deadline for submissions is April 4th. Please note that this year, there will be no remote talks. We hope to see everyone in Riga for in-person presentations!

  • GNOME at FOSDEM 2023

    Join us at FOSDEM 2023 this weekend (February 4th-5th) in Brussels, Belgium!

    FOSDEM is one of the largest annual gatherings for Free Software enthusiasts and contributors. This free event for software developers to meet, share ideas, and collaborate is back in Brussels after a multi-year hiatus.

    We are excited to be back in person hosting a GNOME booth this year! Find us in the K-building on level 2 to pick up a GNOME shirt or hoodie (limited supply!), ask questions, meet contributors and staff, or just come by to say hello! If you would like to volunteer at the GNOME booth please see our discourse post for more details and reach out to Caroline at chenriksen@gnome.org.

    GNOME Beers

    On Saturday (Feb 4th), GNOME will be hosting our famous social evening – GNOME Beers! We will be gathering at BrewDog Brussels (Putterie 20, 1000 Bruxelles, Belgium) starting at 6:30 pm, we’d love you to come along and socialize, meet staff, and chat with core contributors. Please note that this year this event is not sponsored, but you will be able to place personal orders to purchase food or drinks at the bar.

  • Call for GUADEC 2024 (Outside of Europe) – Bid Proposals

    Call for GUADEC 2024 (Outside of Europe) – Bid Proposals

    The GNOME Foundation invites bids for hosting GUADEC 2024.

    GUADEC is the largest annual gathering of GNOME users and developers, and we’re looking for locations outside of Europe for the 2024 conference. Bring GUADEC to your city next year! 

    If you are interested in submitting a bid to host GUADEC 2024 in your city, please send an intention to bid by end of the day on Feb 8th, 2023. Bids will be due on Feb 28th, and you can talk to the Foundation Board and previous GUADEC organizers to find out more about what is involved.

    Your bid should demonstrate that:

    • The location is easily accessible by plane or train
    • You have a motivated local team with a few core members, preferably with experience in event organization
    • A suitable venue is available to host the event
    • There are affordable accommodations and places to eat
    • There is a local industry and government support
    • Rough Cost Estimation for the conference budget.

    Deadlines

    • Intention to bid: 8th of February 2023
    • Bid submission: 28th February 2023

    Intentions to bid and bid submissions should be made by e-mail to board@gnome.org. Both intentions and bids should also be added to: https://wiki.gnome.org/GUADEC/2024/Bids

    Bids from previous years are available for reference. If you need more time to finalize your bid please contact kprogri@gnome.org.

    Organizing GUADEC is a large undertaking but local teams will have help from Foundation Staff members and Engagement Team contributors!
