Stout Update

3:19 pm General

1 can of Black Rock Miner’s Stout, 1kg of Irish Stout #74 Converter, 1 bag of Golding hops and a vanilla pod – all mixed together with some yeast, and the fermentation has begun. Original gravity of 1041. Think I need to invest in some muslin because the sieve I used was probably not quite fine enough. Looking forward to trying this one out, should be a hoot.

Yep, definitely recommend muslin – I make my own little “hop bags” (think tea-bags), from bits of muslin & string, taking care to make them big enough to let the contents swill around nicely: seems to do the trick. Bob gets it by the metre from Hickey’s for me, but your nearest branch is about 19,000km away, so I’d recommend somewhere local if you can!

The fabric shop on Willis St will have some muslin. I did my first extract + hops brew in the weekend. No more kits for me, no sir.

Steve, are you buying your stuff here in Wellington? I’ve been using Great Expectations, but I don’t find like they have a massive amount of variety.
