Logo Feedback

12:58 pm OpenSolaris

Pretty much since the inception of the OpenSolaris project, we’ve been using the full word-mark as the logo, and it’s worked out pretty well. We’ve produced some pretty awesome looking swag (the hoodies and bags given at at the developer summit count as my favourite so far), but to some extent, it has limited use. For example, try fitting it into a boot screen like Alan struggled last month, or using it in a desktop user interface, and you’ll soon find yourself struggling with the size restrictions. Could we free those up?

So, could we also change the logo to generate better brand affinity, and highlight some of the themes that are central to our project? Innovation? Collaboration? Boundlessness? A couple people at Sun have been looking at this very thing, and recently contracted an agency to start exploring some of these ideas –

There are other designs here – go check them out! Thanks to our lovely assistant Simon, and to James Duncan Davidson for the use of his photo of Simon at EuroOSCON.

What do you think? Are there any strong themes coming through? Could you imagine seeing some of those designs on some swag or in the desktop UI? Do you like the color palette, or the design? Could you suggest some changes?

You can tell I am not an American. If I was, I would have the right to bare arms.

I kinna like the logo, except that I still am a fan of the Sun-Open-source orange & blue ( openjdk, opensparc, opensolaris colour scheme )

We could just pick a logo from one of the existing UGs.. I’m sure they’d be ok with.
    For instance, here’s our dog http://opensolaris.org/os/project/poaosug/logo-poaosug.jpg ,
    and Bangalore’s lion http://opensolaris.org/os/project/bosug/bosug.small.png

The blue one is the nicest looking of the three, except for that blurry highlight at the upper edge – but it just has nothing to do with Solaris in any way -> bad.

The one with the small people looks like a Ubuntu inspired design, i dont like it at all – especially the colors are ugly. The third one makes no sense at all and still has the ugly colors.

An additional small Logo as an adition to the full-text Name would be nice. Color wise i’d prefer the orange/blue theme. The style & font of the text should stay as they are …

Of the three, I prefer the S thing shown above, but only in as much as it reminds me the Solaris ‘S’ thing which I think is superb. I hate the other two on the examples, they’re just extremely generic and look like clipart.

Heh, not sure how I missed that link.

Anyways, the one with all the bubbles is my favourite of the bunch ( I agree with Arthur about the Ubuntu looking people one ), but again… colour scheme.

And maybe if the bubbles were rearranged a little bit to look more like a thought bubble ( not exactly a thought bubble, but slightly more suggestive of it than just the mess of bubbles that are there )

I like Logo 1 best, but agree with the others about the colour– there are too many other ‘blue’ companies, logos and distros out there.

  9. Calum Says:

Logo 1 is also rather reminiscent of http://jimmac.musichall.cz/log/?p=419, though…

What about keeping the colour scheme, but using one of the logos…

exempli gratia (keeping in mind my horrible, horrible photoshop skills):
