Your only excuse of not watching it is if you already use git. It’s a one-hour Google tech talk from Linus about Git. You not only learn why Git is the only sane RCS to use, but also that Subversion designers are stupid and that Linus doesn’t trust Google. He claims to not even trust Andrew Morton to take his medicine every day.

I have another excuse: I don’t have flash! ;-)
I’ve seen this presentation, and it’s a good one, but in a lot of cases the only “why” given is “Because they disagree with me, and are therefore, by definition, stupid.” There’s nothing wrong with this, and it makes the presentation funny and enjoyable, but it’s not like he provides many details to back up his claims. And of course he glosses over the various headaches associated with git.
A great presentation, but about as objective as a Subversion fan pointing you to a Google Tech Talk by the Subversion devs (I recommend their “Poisonous People” talk, by the way…not about Subversion except as just another open source project example).
Sandy, I agree that this video is not good as a position paper on git vs anything. It’s interesting for two reasons:
1) What’s the design decisions behind git? Or: What does Linus care about?
2) How does Linus envision people using the system?
It’s also funny because of his direct way of saying things.
It’s only supposed to be thought-provoking, not feeding you an opinion.
[…] just ran across another link to Linus’ talk today. For some reason that presentation irritates me. I already know that […]
That Mark Mazurek blog is some weird mirror. The real blog entry that mentions this one is at http://zaitcev.livejournal.com/146802.html
