GNOME Latin update

There is now a mailing list for the GNOME Latin translation. Please join it if you’re interested.

There has been a fairly impressive amount of work done already. One school has contacted the team about translating applications as a co-operation between their Latin and CS departments, so the students get to discover the details of the localisation process and sharpen their Latin skills at the same time. I’d like to see more of this kind of thing.

I know almost nothing about how KDE runs things, but their Latin translation page contains the strange note “Last update : 2004-02-27 23:40:37– Active Team.” It might be worthwhile using one team to work on both.

  1. Translating things into Latin is a disgusting waste of time and resources. There are better things to do with your spare time — why not volunteer to cure hunger rather than making software available in a language that died out centuries ago for practical purposes and is now spoken natively by no-one?

  2. Really? Latin? *Really*? You could think of nothing more important to spend time on? How about fixing some of the 30+ crasher bugs!

  3. These people translating things into latin by and large aren’t the ones with the skillsets needed to fix bugs, and most serious, obvious bugs have been reported already (though you should always check before you assume that.)

I think this is great. How are our lojban and esperanto translations coming? I’d love to be able to immerse myself in those to help me learn them..

  4. The Esperanto translation is progressing nicely. See http://lernu.net/ for tuition…

PS. I am not a hypocrite: Esperanto is obscure but useful, has native speakers and serves a practical purpose. Latin is merely obscure.
