Introducing GNOME 48

The GNOME Project is proud to announce the release of GNOME 48, ‘Bengaluru’.

GNOME 48 brings several exciting updates, including improved notification stacking for a cleaner experience, better performance with dynamic triple buffering, and the introduction of new fonts like Adwaita Sans & Mono. The release also includes Decibels, a minimalist audio player, new digital well-being features, battery health preservation with an 80% charge limit, and HDR support for compatible displays.

For a detailed breakdown, visit the GNOME 48 Release Notes.

GNOME 48 will be available shortly in many distributions, such as Fedora 42 and Ubuntu 25.04. If you want to try it today, you can look for their beta releases, which will be available very soon

Getting GNOME

We are also providing our own installer images for debugging and testing features. These images are meant for installation in a vm and require GNOME Boxes with UEFI support. We suggest getting Boxes from Flathub.

GNOME OS Nightly

If you’re looking to build applications for GNOME 48, check out the GNOME 48 Flatpak SDK on Flathub.
You can also support the GNOME project by donating—your contributions help us improve infrastructure, host community events, and keep Flathub running. Every donation makes a difference!

This six-month effort wouldn’t have been possible without the whole GNOME community, made of contributors and friends from all around the world: developers, designers, documentation writers, usability and accessibility specialists, translators, maintainers, students, system administrators, companies, artists, testers, the local GNOME.Asia team in Bengaluru, and last, but not least, our users.

We hope to see some of you at GUADEC 2025 in Brescia, Italy!

Our next release, GNOME 49, is planned for September. Until then, enjoy GNOME 48.

Exciting Updates on the GNOME Development Initiative and Sovereign Tech Fund

GNOME Foundation Executive Director Holly Million had a call this week with Tara Tarakiyee, our program manager at Sovereign Tech Fund (STF), providing him with an update on the project work taking place under the Foundation’s current contract with STF and the Foundation’s plans to continue and expand the work. We’re thrilled to share those updates with the greater community here!

Key Updates

  • The contracted work continues to progress, and the Sovereign Tech Fund is very encouraged by what has been accomplished to date.
  • The areas of work currently being funded by STF are planned to continue and to be strengthened and expanded as part of our new, permanent GNOME Development Initiative, as described in our draft strategic plan: foundation.gnome.org/strategicplan
  • The Foundation is reorganizing the project and hiring an additional program manager to work with current managers on the new Initiative. We are finalizing a contract for transitional work with the new manager and will make a formal announcement next week.
  • We hope to significantly increase the amount of development work happening through the Initiative with a process that allows community suggestions for needed work and an application process for grants for proposed work.
  • The Foundation recently applied to the Open Tech Fund to strengthen the Initiative, including proposing to hire a permanent full-time program manager and to invest in other important work to support our community
  • The Foundation will apply for a new round of contract funding when the Sovereign Tech Fund reopens for applications in mid-June.
  • We have launched the GNOME Development Fund, which will raise additional support from the community to fuel the development work possible through the Initiative. Starting immediately, all donations made through the Fund will build the Initiative. This Fund page will continue to develop, with counters, a backer list, tiered benefits for backers at differing levels, and badges coming next. Donate today to support the future of GNOME. gnome.org/donate

In other exciting news, the Foundation has new professional bookkeeping systems in place, completed a financial review in preparation for a required financial audit next year, and at the completion of the second quarter of this fiscal year, the Foundation is performing under budget and is on track in our commitment to having a non-deficit year. We will share more details, including graphs and financial details in a separate update soon.

Support GNOME this Giving Tuesday

With hundreds of contributors all over the world working on GNOME projects, we’re doing what we can to move the project forward! But we still need help. Our organization is a 501(c)3 (in the United States) and relies on financial contributions to keep the lights on. Your financial support goes towards GNOME conferences, intern sponsors, new releases, staff resources, infrastructure, and so much more!

In the US, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving has been designated Giving Tuesday and is a day focused on supporting nonprofits. As a nonprofit, the GNOME Foundation relies on your financial support. No contribution is too big or too small and corporate and personal donations are always welcome. Please join us for our fundraising event today, Tuesday, November 28th, as we take part in the Giving Tuesday movement and ask you to make a contribution to support the GNOME Foundation.

While a financial contribution helps, we know there are many ways to help support our fundraising. We’ve included some non-financial ways you can help:

  • Share or repost GNOME social media messages. Help us get the message out!
  • Make a donation request on behalf of GNOME! Ask friends and family to contribute to an organization that is important to you. https://www.gnome.org/donate/
  • Use the upcoming holidays to ask for contributions in lieu of presents. This is a great thing to do for birthdays and the upcoming holiday season! https://www.gnome.org/donate/
  • Take advantage of your company match program. Many organizations will match your donation – make sure you are taking advantage of all the ways you can donate!

We are excited for 2024 and hope we can count on your support during Giving Tuesday. Help us build another great year at GNOME!

Thank you from all of us at the GNOME Foundation.

A Letter from our Executive Director

Hello, GNOME community! I am ecstatic to be joining the GNOME Foundation as the organization’s new executive director. I have been searching for a leadership position with a creative, forward-thinking, revolutionary nonprofit. My main goal was to find a place where I could apply my 32 years of nonprofit management and fundraising experience to advance a great mission, and I know I have found the right place—the right home—in GNOME.

I’m entering the GNOME community as a humble newcomer, with an open mind and a desire to learn from all of you. At the same time, I also bring lots of knowledge and experience to strengthen the GNOME Foundation so it can advance its mission effectively and have even more impact. I have an extensive and wide-ranging background in nonprofit management and fundraising. I worked for 25 years as a documentary film producer and filmmaker. I am an artist through and through. I also have lots of practical nonprofit organizational experience.

In addition, I am a passionate champion of democracy, collaboration, creativity, openness, and human unity. I also have direct experience with the open source world—from a biotechnology vantage point—from my time as the executive director of the BioBricks Foundation, an international science nonprofit whose mission is ensuring bioengineering is done in an open and ethical manner, and which developed open source legal tools and open source data-sharing for bioengineers. I am a fervent believer in open source!

I am impressed by the international reach of the GNOME community and the diversity of the individuals involved in creating all of this amazing output. Together, you have created something so powerful that can be further harnessed to create even more social benefit. I see many opportunities for the GNOME community to do even more incredible work, create even more products, solve even more problems, and leverage GNOME as a tool for social justice and human evolution at a pivotal time for all of us.

Now that I have shared a little bit about myself and my excitement about joining the GNOME Foundation, I invite you to reach out to me to introduce yourself, tell me about your passion for GNOME, and share your ideas for what the GNOME community needs at this point in its journey. I look forward to our collaboration!

Join us for a meet and greet with Holly!

Please join us online for a meet and greet with Holly on November 14th at 18:00 UTC (10:00 AM PST)! This is a fantastic opportunity to get to know our new Executive Director, hear about her vision for the Foundation, and ask questions. Please let us know if you plan to join the meet and greet by registering online: https://events.gnome.org/e/HollyMillion

To ensure that Holly addresses as many questions as possible, we ask you to submit yours in advance. To submit your questions please visit https://events.gnome.org/event/172/surveys/81.

We look forward to chatting with you on November 14th!
