GNOME.Asia Summit 2020 invites you to participate as a speaker at the conference on the 24th and 26th of November 2020 by submitting your abstract.
GNOME.Asia Summit is the featured annual GNOME conference in Asia. It focuses primarily on the GNOME desktop, and also covers applications and platform development tools. The Summit brings together the GNOME community in Asia to provide a forum for users, developers, foundation leaders, governments and businesses to discuss the present technology and future developments.
The possible topics are, but not limited to :
Contributing to GNOME
UI design
Accessibility
Human Interface Engineering (Icons and Graphic Design)
Marketing/Engagement
Developing GNOME on embedded systems or open hardware
Contributing to Linux and FLOSS
Linux kernel and development
The development and promotion of open-source operating systems
Distributions, including Debian, Fedora, openSUSE, Ubuntu, and FreeBSD
The development and promotion of other open source projects
We are also interested in other topics related to Free/Libre and Open Source Software which are not listed above.
Sessions will be scheduled for 25 or 50 minutes (Q&A included). The session could be a technical talk, panel discussion, or Birds of a Feather session (BoF).

Submission Criteria
Please provide a short abstract of your presentation (under 200 words). Also include your name, biographical information, title, and desired length of session. Please submit your proposal to the following link: https://events.gnome.org/event/24/abstracts/.
The reviewers team will evaluate the entries based on the submitted abstracts and available time by following the schedule.
GUADEC starts today, July 22nd! GUADEC is the main GNOME conference, bringing together users and enthusiasts from all over the world. GUADEC 2020 takes place online.
This GUADEC will feature an exciting set of speakers and sessions, which will bring you the latest news and updates about the project; introductions to open source collaborations; and explorations into free software thinking. Later in the week there will be Birds of a Feather sessions, where people get together around a shared interest, and workshops. After regular conference activities, there will be some special social events.

Up to $65,000 in cash prizes to be awarded for projects that encourage open-source coders
The GNOME Foundation, in conjunction with Endless, is proud to announce that starting April 9th, entries will be accepted for the inaugural Community Engagement Challenge, an exciting new opportunity to submit a project that will engage beginning coders with the free and open-source software (“FOSS”) community.
The Challenge is a three-phase competition designed to generate stimulating ideas that will help connect the next generation of coders to the FOSS community and keep them active and engaged for years to come. Up to $65,000 in cash prizes are available to the individuals or teams with the best entries.
“Through the Challenge we hope to reach a diverse audience, to encourage beginning coders to get involved with the FOSS community to help ensure that free software is available long into the future,” said Neil McGovern, GNOME Foundation Executive Director. “What better way to do that than to reach out to the community itself to come up with creative ways to inspire the next generation?”
“Our mission at Endless has evolved initially from working with underserved populations in emerging markets and giving them access to important computing tools,” said Matt Dalio, Founder, Endless. “It has now become important to us to help the youth of today shape their technology, rather than be shaped by it. This initiative with The GNOME Foundation is the perfect partnership to further our mission.”
The Challenge will ask entrants to devise creative ways to promote open-source software to coders typically in high school and college. How a submission will achieve this goal has deliberately been left open-ended to encourage unique, novel approaches.
The first phase of the Challenge asks entrants to submit a written proposal for their concept no later than July 1, 2020. Twenty entries will be chosen to move to the next round and receive $1000 each. The second phase of the Challenge will require proof of concept, with four entries receiving $5000 and moving onto the final round. The final round will call for a deliverable end product, with the winner receiving $15,000 and the second place finisher receiving $10,000.
Apart from what is outlined in the Challenge Rules, there are no restrictions on the form submissions must take: they may be software projects, educational materials, videos, games, presentations, events, or anything else that promotes engagement of beginning coders with the FOSS community. Creativity is highly encouraged of all entrants!
The winner of the final round is currently scheduled to be announced in the spring of 2021.
The Challenge is supported by Endless, an organization comprised of companies, initiatives, and philanthropic endeavors with the singular mission to help children take control of their digital worlds, not be controlled by them.

The first day, the 22nd of July, will be called “GNOME Open Day”. The GNOME Foundation is looking for proposals for this day, in particular, that will focus on local outreach, governance, and getting more people involved in the Zacatecas region. These talks should be meant for new GNOME users. We also welcome talks on this day to be given in both Spanish and English to make them more accessible for locals.

GNOME will be present at FOSDEM 2020 which takes place this weekend in Brussels, Belgium, from February 1 – 2. FOSDEM is one of the largest gatherings for Free Software enthusiasts and contributors.
GNOME will be hosting a booth in the K-building where attendees can meet contributors, test the latest version of GNOME, and pick up some of the latest GNOME merch designs.
On Saturday, GNOME will be hosting our famous social evening – GNOME Beers! Gathering at Bonnefooi starting at 7:30pm, we’d love you to come along and socialize, meet staff, and chat with core contributors. The GNOME.Asia Committee is inviting interested parties to submit proposals for hosting the GNOME.Asia Summit during the second half of 2020.
GNOME.Asia Summit is the featured annual GNOME Conference in Asia. The event focuses primarily on the GNOME desktop, but also covers applications and the development platform tools. It brings together the GNOME community in Asia to provide a forum for users, contributors, foundation leaders, governments, and businesses to discuss the current technology and future developments.
Over the last twelve years, GNOME.Asia Summit has been held in many cities throughout Asia, including Gresik, Beijing, Ho-Chi-Minh City, Taipei, Bangalore, Hong Kong, Seoul, Beijing, Depok, New Delhi, and Chongqing.
The Committee’s preference is to find a new location each year in
order to spread GNOME throughout Asia, and we are looking for local
organizers to rise to the challenge of organizing an excellent GNOME
event. The GNOME.Asia committee will assist in the process, but there is
a definitive need for individuals to be actively involved and committed
to the planning and execution of the event.
How to Submit a Proposal:
Interested parties are hereby invited to submit a formal proposal to the GNOME.Asia Committee. The deadline for the proposals is January 17th, 2020. Please email your proposal to gnome-asia-committee-list@gnome.org.
We might invite you to present your proposal in more details over our regular IRC meetings, or send you additional questions and requests. Results will be announced by the second week of February 2020.
The conference might require availability of facilities for 3-5 days, including a weekend, during the second half of 2020. Final event dates should avoid other key free software conferences or other events that may conflict.
The key points that should be included in the proposal, and which will be used to decide among candidates, are.
Local community support for hosting the conference.
Venue details. Information about infrastructure and facilities to hold the conference should be provided.
Preliminary schedule with main program & different activities.
Information about how Internet connectivity will be managed.
Lodging choices ranging from affordable housing to nicer hotels,
and information about distances between the venue and lodging options.
The availability of restaurants or the organization of catering on-site, cost of food/soft drinks/beer.
The availability and cost of travel from major Asian and European cities.
Local industries, universities and government support.
Please provide a reasonably detailed budget (sponsorships, expenses, etc).
Provide plans for local sponsorship.
Provide plans to encourage student and youth participation.

The GNOME Foundation is excited to announce that GUADEC 2020 will take place between the 22nd – 28th of July in Zacatecas, Mexico.
Zacatecas is a city and municipality in Mexico, located in the north-central part of the country. Set in a valley and surrounded by mountains, the city, which had its start as a Spanish mining camp in the mid-16th century, has a rich interesting history and is a very pleasant city to visit, featuring several interesting attractions.
The foundation is confident that the organizing team will do their best to make GUADEC 2020 a great experience for every party involved.
