To my liberal friends … just let that sink in.

Full disclosure: I didn’t fact-check this. But it makes me think about the argument in a new way.

  1. Broadly, the ten countries with the highest murder rates in the world are Honduras, Venezuela, Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, Jamaica, Swaziland, Saint Kitts and Nevis, South Africa, and Colombia, while the United States doesn’t crack the top hundred.

    ‘Nuff said.

  2. Kurt von Finck Which is still not what the graphic was trying to say. Someone made up complete falsehoods to push an agenda that is against gun-control, let that sink in too.

  3. Michael Hall During the previous “assault weapons” ban we had Columbine. And now we have presidential candidates touting the efficacy of such bans.

    That’s twisting the facts, too.

  4. Kurt von Finck Two wrongs don’t make a right. I think we both want fact-based policy making, and spreading untrue claims is not a good way to make that happen.

  5. Tough gun laws in cities are symptoms of the problems caused by dense populations and poverty. If you could spread everyone out they wouldn’t face the challenges that lead to gang violence and dealing in contraband like drugs and illegal firearms. But.. To do that you’d need to give them land and livestock.. Maybe aground 40 acres part family, with maybe a mule?

  6. Right, and this reminds us that while arguing in favour of gun control laws, we need to also be arguing for single-payer health care, an adequate social safety net, and heavily subsidized education.

  7. Jeff Bailey Education that includes band and shop class and theater and things that teach kids to think and accept that not everyone does things the same way. That differences are OK, and acceptance is the rule.

  8. Kurt von Finck Yep.  I’ve argued elsewhere for three tracks to education:

     * Standard academic college-track that we have today.  High school is essentially college prep.

    * Community college/vocational track.  Enough math and writing that the student can negotiate jr. college academics without getting overly theoretical.

    * Early graduation track.  High school graduation requirements include basics of law (tenancy, traffic, labour), resume writing and internships, fixing cars, etc.  The idea is “You’re going to walk out of here on graduation day with no job and nowhere to live.” and give the tools to navigate that.

  9. Angela Doerksen pointed out to me this morning that where she visited in Austria has this sort of decision point when people turn 16.
