Early peak into Gnome 3’s potential

I am stoked to be designing a Gnome that kicks ass for hackers too. McCann is right: the ‘choice‘ between design for office monkeys and hacking monkeys is a false dichotomy. We can make both their lives better: they’re running (almost :=) the same cognitive architecture underneath. Writing for ourselves can be fucking sweet. If we’re eager and happy, we’ll make it better for everyone.
Lets get some new hackers in on this shit. Kids? Time to shine.
Hackfest In Summary
The Gnome 2010 UX Hackfest has been such fun! Today is the last day, reckon we’ll be riotous. It was a wonderful, familiar memory. I know not everyone reciprocates (hi hatemail, bye hatemail), but I missed you Gnome.
It was rad to spool out into airy discussions with everyone from Mark to Mo’, but still land some useful designs at the end. That doesn’t happen on every trip to lala land! Vis a vis the hackfest, this doc is only the tip of the iceberg – and a unfinished tip at that. Many amazing designs for other pieces of gnome have emerged too: from system preferences to empathy. As always, props to my homies @ Canonical & Google for splashin’ the green on us.

I’ll make more. Hopefully loads more static mockups coming too. And once I get my scanner, the mockups will be more readable (sorry).
Anyway, here’s some thoughts in case you don’t want to read the PDF…
We want Gnome 3 to become…
- a transparent tool…
- a tool that accommodates complex tasks without breaking your focus.
- the WORK should occupy your mind, a familiar TOOL should disappear as you work through it, not at it.
- a tool that increasingly disappears in-hand as you become accustomed to it present-at-hand
- a toolbox that’s extremely fast to rummage through
- a toolbox where old/obscure tools can be readily found
- a toolbox where familiar files/tools/apps find your hand right when you need them… and recede into the periphery when you’re done with them
- provide ways to flow past the interruptions of an online existence
- turn task-management into a 500ms operation
- make ordinary laptops more physical, more direct, and much much faster to use for common operations (try to get the advantages sought by kb shortcuts & gestures for a much larger number of operations)
- using an ordinary laptop in ways that naught but touchscreens are now (and touchscreens have their own special problems that detract from their physicality advantages). a toolbox that encourages files, apps and tools to find your hands as you need them, and recede into the periphery when you don’t.
This doc isn’t much past the grey and orange concept-babble that richly fills my inner life. But it’ll give you a taste. And we’ll do better. It’ll get more concrete. Some is known that is not yet described, and some has been described that will turn out badly and need to be ditched. But play around. See how it feels. At this fetal stage, Explore > Reject.
We still need a lot more writing on how these ideas are concretely useful, and how important problems they raise are addressed/ameliorated. No design is perfect. Every design is a tradeoff. You get the center right, and then trim the pain from the edges. You learn lessons from the edges, and use the lessons to revise the core. Rinse, repeat.

Seth: Thanks for the reply.
Regarding desktops, getting rid of the Desktop folder does not necessarily mean getting rid of that layer of icons behind the windows. It’s just that the folder itself is entirely redundant, and desktop_is_home_dir can fix the problem for all those people who expect that Desktop layer.
The problem you describe with tags is precisely a problem with the interface for accessing them. One should definitely be able to “drill down” though tags just like one enters folders and sub-folders. It’s all a matter of a proper interface. Without one, tags in general can never become widely used in place of folders, which is a conceptual shame. In any case, these fundamental problems need to be solved at some point. Once they are, my original qualms with the top-level folders will still remain.
Anyway, I’ll let you get back to the more relevant issues now.

Aww, I use the places menu a lot. Although admittedly, the only thing I use it for is to access folders I pinned there; all the other stuff can take a hike. 😉

A few things.
I’m very excited about the method you’ve described in order to group tasks and then have something(zeitgeist I assume) recall them. Since I first heard about zeitgeist about a year ago, I have been thinking about this sort of functionality, though I had always assumed people would create projects and recall them by name(assuming some dialog pop-up upon clicking the applet). The method you’ve described is more organic(meaning less obtrusive).
Additionally, I’d like to know if you’ve heard of Notion Ink’s Adam. Specifically, the mousepad. It’s on the back of the device and it’s mapped absolutely. This device occurred to me when someone mentioned in the comments about how useful hot edges would be on devices that weren’t laptops.
Lastly, when these ideas were being thrown around, was Gnome Shell considered to be the way forward? I recall reading that you had said that an informal poll amongst yourselves had found few(any?) dissenters to the GS vision, so it seemed like GS was in mind somewhat. Assuming that to be the case, is their a plan to reintroduce a persistent(if hide-able) panel? In the mockups from UX, there appeared to be two panels and it looked like a Cluttered(Intel’s lib) Gnome Panel.
Finally(truly), I agree with David who says that given what you appear to be moving towards, nixing the Desktop folder(just the folder, not the drawn Desktop) makes sense. IMHO, zeitgeist seems to have already done the work for you with regards to your search problem(in the pdf) by attempting to associate activities using locality. I haven’t tried it yet, but assuming it works, I don’t really see the need to continue traditional hierarchical sorting patterns which seem based upon a much more limited(one at each level, excepting links) tagging system. Something I personally hate doing to having to sort things into dirs. As someone else pointed out, where do you put your music video? Answer: tag it with music and video(the video part, at least, should be generated automystically based upon magic numbers). I, for one, would rather never have to enter a file broswer again. Obviously, that isn’t practical, but trying to min it seems like an obvious thing. You might mention the often used directories like Music,Downloads, Pictures. How do tags fix that? Simply by creating a keyword pre/suffix that you add to a tag category. There are other ways, naturally.
To finish, I use Gnome-Do, and that has really changed the way I work. Gnome-Shell already has a bit of Gnome-Do with it by using the Windows key. Hopefully it will do more. As it does, I truly hope it will incorporate these ideas that you’ve discussed. I really would like Gnome 3(or 3.8, or whatever) to be a DE that really lets us work in a more seamless way with our tasks.
