This release brings remote login with RDP, variable refresh rates (VRR), many accessibility improvements, enhanced notifications, and improved Settings. The Files app comes with a new global search and many other enhancements, and a whole slew of new apps have joined GNOME Circle.

GNOME 46 will be available shortly in many distributions, such as Fedora 40 and Ubuntu 24.04. If you want to try it today, you can look for their beta releases, which will be available very soon:

Getting GNOME

We are also providing our own installer images for debugging and testing features. These images are meant for installation in a vm and require GNOME Boxes with UEFI support. We suggest getting Boxes from Flathub.

GNOME OS Nightly

If you are interested in building applications for GNOME 46, look for the GNOME 46 Flatpak SDK, which is available in the http://www.flathub.org/ repository.

This six-month effort wouldn’t have been possible without the whole GNOME community, made of contributors and friends from all around the world:
developers, designers, documentation writers, usability and accessibility specialists, translators, maintainers, students, system administrators, companies, artists, testers, the local GNOME Asia team in Nepal, and last, but not least, our users.

GNOME would not exist without all of you. Thank you to everyone!

We hope to see some of you at GUADEC 2024 in Denver, Colorado!

Our next release, GNOME 47, is planned for September 2024. Until then, enjoy GNOME 46.

GUADEC 2024 Call for Participation Extension

We are pleased to announce that we have extended the GUADEC 2024 Call for Participation deadline to March 24th.

This extension is available to anyone submitting a remote presentation or who does not need travel sponsorship to attend in person. Any speakers requesting travel sponsorship from the GNOME Foundation will still need to submit their proposals, along with their sponsorship requests, by the original deadline of February 18th.

We opened the CfP and set an original deadline earlier this year to give speakers who need visas enough time to receive their acceptance and schedule appointments. We understand that in some countries it can take a long time to get a US Visa appointment and we have adjusted our timeline to allow for that. We’d like all speakers who plan to present in person and need a visa to be able to apply as soon as possible.

Additionally, as many have applied for travel sponsorship we would like to know before proceeding with visa appointments if the speaker’s talk has been accepted or not. We have a tight travel budget and this helps us use it efficiently as well as allows us to provide the documents needed for visa applications earlier. However, as many of our contributors are still working on preparing for the GNOME 46 release we hope that this extension will allow them more time to organize and finalize a presentation, BoF, or workshop proposal.

You can find more details about the visa procedures on our website: https://events.gnome.org/event/209/page/362-us-visa-requirements-and-other-information.

If there are additional questions please don’t hesitate to contact us at guadec@gnome.org.

Support GNOME this Giving Tuesday

With hundreds of contributors all over the world working on GNOME projects, we’re doing what we can to move the project forward! But we still need help. Our organization is a 501(c)3 (in the United States) and relies on financial contributions to keep the lights on. Your financial support goes towards GNOME conferences, intern sponsors, new releases, staff resources, infrastructure, and so much more!

In the US, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving has been designated Giving Tuesday and is a day focused on supporting nonprofits. As a nonprofit, the GNOME Foundation relies on your financial support. No contribution is too big or too small and corporate and personal donations are always welcome. Please join us for our fundraising event today, Tuesday, November 28th, as we take part in the Giving Tuesday movement and ask you to make a contribution to support the GNOME Foundation.

While a financial contribution helps, we know there are many ways to help support our fundraising. We’ve included some non-financial ways you can help:

  • Share or repost GNOME social media messages. Help us get the message out!
  • Make a donation request on behalf of GNOME! Ask friends and family to contribute to an organization that is important to you. https://www.gnome.org/donate/
  • Use the upcoming holidays to ask for contributions in lieu of presents. This is a great thing to do for birthdays and the upcoming holiday season! https://www.gnome.org/donate/
  • Take advantage of your company match program. Many organizations will match your donation – make sure you are taking advantage of all the ways you can donate!

We are excited for 2024 and hope we can count on your support during Giving Tuesday. Help us build another great year at GNOME!

Thank you from all of us at the GNOME Foundation.
