  1. just upgraded from 0.7, it doesn’t work.. it freezes just after starting.
    anyone can help?
    thanks!
    the pop up window:
“The window “Shotwell” is not responding.
Forcing this application to quit will cause you to lose any unsaved changes.”
    (running ubuntu 10.10)

  2. first thanks, second totem? ugh get that taste out of my mouth.
there are lots of programs that want video-thumbs generated – Each one seems to want to do it with a different helper app.
I know its not as user friendly, but if we could pop a bash line into a shotwell config file and generate our thumbs how we want to that would be nice.
I use ffmpeg for thumbs in nautilus – i have gconf settings for nautilus to use this method – yet not even gnome projects check gconf for an existing method just add gstreamer as a requirement, or xine or totem maybe or helix libs, etc.
Anyway no big deal really i guess, but i use shotwell because of its simple nature.

The reason we don’t read the preferred thumbnailer from GConf is that it doesn’t standardize the parameters we need: size, and a “raw” image without decoration.
Another issue with GConf is that people who don’t have Gnome installed would complain, since they won’t have a section for video thumbnailers.
The best solution would be if Gtk or perhaps Gio provided a mechanism to get a thumbnail from a file, but unfortunately there’s no function for that, at least not yet.

  4. I didn’t mean the gconf key would be my chosen solution (i am using gnome now, but haven’t always and the future is grim 😉 – and i hadnt thought about the filmstrip effect that is default @gconf).
My chosen fix would be to let me drop a bash line into a shotwell config to tell it how to generate video thumbs, let that line default to `totem blah blah` and put totem as a recommended package instead of a requirement.
is there a shotwell or yorba forum? i am so tempted to post a short wishlist or ask questions here but doesn’t seem like the right place.

  5. Shotwell is one of the nicest GNOME application I have tried for a long time. It’s clearly the best photo organizing software for Linux.
Btw, where can I find full release notes? I am curious to know all the minor enhancements you guys have made to this cool app.

  6. So, did I have to do something to get my old underexposed RAW photos to display correctly in the new version? They look the same both in thumbnail and when I open them.
Timo: IMHO Shotwell is the best FREE photo organizing software for Linux. I really wish it had some of the adjustment options that Bibble 5 has, as with the ones currently available I often feel very limited. If I wasn’t travelling at the moment I’d try to extend Shotwell myself (assuming it’s open source, but it is, right?).

  7. ok, so the answer is multipage tiff’s are not really supported (only first page is displayed). bummer..

  8. First I want to say, great work guys, soo far it seems to work fine for me.
Secondly, please find a better way to say ‘Import place’, because when you are sleepy or stressed you will click a button that says import rather than ‘copy’.
I know, I should’ve checked before I cleaned my card, but now I’ve lost two very important photos because of this mistake.
Maybe a better wording would be ‘Only create link to photo(s)’. Or just keep it like it was, purely importing/copying the files from one source to another.

  9. Sorry to hear that you lost some of your photos. The reason we avoid using the word “link” is that some users find that confusing, since “link” has a very specific meaning in *nix systems.
That said, we’re totally open to new wording ideas for that dialog.
Another possibility would be to have a “remember my decision” checkbox. If you always plan to do one or the other, that would help eliminate mistakes. Do you think that would help in your situation?
