Yorba has just released Shotwell 0.11.6, a bug-fix release of our popular GNOME-based photo manager. This release fixes a critical bug in which adding or modifying tags in the single-photo view could result in the loss of tag data. We recommend that all users upgrade.

Ubuntu Oneiric ships with Shotwell 0.11.x pre-installed. Oneiric users will be upgraded to Shotwell 0.11.6 automatically as part of their regular software update cycle.
Are you that Oneiric users will be upgraded to Shotwell 0.11.6 automatically as part of their regular software update cycle? I thought that Canonical only updated packages on the next Ubuntu release, in this case version 12.04, unless there is a serious security problem.

Being that the issue in question involves potential data loss, we’re sure Canonical will push out Shotwell 0.11.6 to its users. In general, updates to the current releases of both Ubuntu and Fedora are issued if: (i) a security problem exists, as you said; (ii) there exists an issue that causes system instability; or (iii) there exists an issue that can result in the loss of a user’s data.
We’ve decided not to put an Oneiric build on our PPA because we didn’t want to step on Canonical’s toes (which we did with the Shotwell 0.11.5 release — we put the 0.11.5 update on our PPA and then Canonical pushed out their own Unity-tweaked update to Shotwell 0.11.5 a few days later as part of their normal software update cycle; the result was that users who upgraded from our PPA didn’t get the overlaid Unity tweaks present in Canonical’s package — bad stuff).
If, for whatever reason, Canonical decides not to ship Shotwell 0.11.6 as part of their normal software update cycle, we will release an Oneiric build of Shotwell 0.11.6 on our PPA.

i tried to close program, delete the *_CR2_shotwell.jpg and *.xmp files, open shotwell again, but data are lost.
how can i do?

Could you email one of the problematic CR2 files to shotwell@yorba.org along with a brief message explaining the problem. That way our devs can attempt to reproduce the behavior you’re seeing in-house and, hopefully, fix it.

i forgot to say that often vertical photos, are giving strange problems (picture is rotated, when magnified) but i have to watch (and have some snapshots) it again. next time i have this problem i’ll report it to you.

Still no update for Oneiric. Have you positively heard that an update is coming? I would hate to lose any more tags, so I’m just hanging here with no way to actually use Shotwell until it’s updated.
Yes. I have positive confirmation from Sebastien Bacher at Canonical that Shotwell 0.11.6 is already slotted to be pushed out in the next round of updates. If you can’t wait to get your hands on the latest Shotwell though, you could always build from source: http://www.yorba.org/shotwell/install/ 😉

I’m really starting to like Shotwell more and more. Good stuff. I have one or two requests and I don’t know where to send them.
1.) Uploading to Picasa would be a bit better if Shotwell could incorporate Picasa’s dimension requirements for unlimited storage.
2.) When launching Shotwell, instead of having to click on “Find” (or ctrl-F), how about allowing the user to simply start typing (anywhere while Shotwell is focused) and Shotwell automatically begins searching the tags? Would be a bit quicker and slicker, don’t you think?

I installed Shotwell 0.11.4 in my native Xubuntu Oneiric, will it also auto-update to 0.11.6?
I experience the problem of not being able to use the function: “set as desktop background” (CTRL-B).
I hope this will be resolved in next updates…

As far as auto-updating to 0.11.6 goes, if Xubuntu uses the same update servers as Ubuntu classic and you have the Shotwell package installed, it should be upgraded automatically.
As far as setting the desktop background on XFCE goes, this is currently unsupported. Shotwell 0.11.x is supported on 3 configurations: Ubuntu with Unity (2D or 3D), Ubuntu with classic GNOME (Natty only), and Fedora with the GNOME 3 shell.
We do, however, have an open “suggestion” ticket in our bug tracking system for adding the ability to set the desktop background on XFCE systems (see http://redmine.yorba.org/issues/3653). If you’re a developer yourself and want to implement this, that’d be great. Pending review, we’d be happy to add your patch to the Shotwell code base!

However in Xubuntu 11.10, Thunar has the set as desktop background implementation already as a standard. Unfortunately not directly from Shotwell though.
Not being a devoloper myself I (also) call out to anyone who would like to implement this. To keep Shotwell useful on every distribution and not only the ‘fancy’ newer ones.

I recently switched from debian testing to fedora.
Unfortunately only shotwell 0.10.1 is available there, however, my library is of course already saved by shotwell 0.11.5. Therefore I’m unable to start the program.
I tried to compile it from source on fedora 16 (as it says it’s supported) however after installing some additional deps (which are not listed) i came up to the point:
Shotwell requires Vala compiler 0.14.1 or greater.
Fedora ships 0.14.0, so this is sad I guess. Should I just wait some months before I can reuse my shotwell or what would you advice me to do?

No need to worry, you can easily build Vala 0.14.1 from source! Just grab it from here.

This took some time, but it did work in the end!
Before compiling vala 0.14.1 I needed:
yum install bison flex
and to compile shotwell additionaly:
yum install libstdc++-static
the rest was already there, shotwell 0.11.90+trunk seems to be working perfectly, also setting an image as the background in gnome-shell is ok!

I’m subscribed to the Shotwell tag’s feed, but the last several posts have all simply been left uncategorized, so I was surprised to discover that there had been several releases after 0.11.3! Would you be willing to tag/categorize the Shotwell posts so that they appear in the Shotwell feed? Thanks!
