Shotwell 0.7.2 and gexiv2 0.2.1 released

Yorba has released Shotwell 0.7.2, an update to our digital photo
organizer.  This release includes crucial fixes and translation updates.  It’s highly recommended that all
users upgrade.

This release includes the following:

  * Fixed major startup problem when the user’s Pictures directory is actually
    a symbolic link.
  * Fixed potential crasher when the user’s Pictures directory contains a
    large number of subdirectories.
  * No longer asking if copying or linking if importing from Pictures directory
    (which will always be linked).
  * Fixed update problem when using an external editor on a photo that was
    edited externally in an earlier session.
  * Various bug fixes.
  * Updated translations.

In addition, Yorba has released an update to our Exiv2 GObject wrapper library, gexiv2 0.2.1.  (This library is a requirement for Shotwell.)  This update fixes a bug where a photo file with malformed EXIF could cause a crash.  It’s highly recommended that all users upgrade.

  1. Will I get this latest Shotwell update in Ubuntu 10.10 Beta without adding PPA? I mean, Ubuntu 10.10 is still in its beta and it will take another month for the final release. Any help much appreciated.

  2. Hey! I’ve tried 0.5.1, 0.7.1 and now 0.7.2 for windows – and none of them work for me. I can’t import even a single image. After picking any of the import methods available (with links or copying images) I can see only blue progress bar stopped at ~25% and nothing more. Older versions used to hang at that moment, the only improvement with 0.7.2 is that software is still runnig – but still nothing is happening. But it freezes anyway – everytime I’m trying to access ‘Preferences’. Any ideas why is it happening to me? Judging from screenshots and description shotwell is the software I’m looking for – its clean, simple and have all the features I’m looking for. I don’t want to give up but I don’t know how to solve this problem…

  3. yes, I’m on WinXP. Thank you for the link with the explanation. Hopefully developers will be able to fix this bug so I’m looking forward for 0.8.0.

  4. Kiterunner,
    We do hope that 0.7.2 is included in 10.10, but don’t know as of yet if it will be accepted. You’re correct, the beta is still a month away, and the bugs that 0.7.2 fixes are significant enough that I hope it makes it in.

  5. I have one question that is it possbile to disable raw photos? i shoot raw+jpg but importing raw files are quite slow. so importing olnly jpg-s are making more sense

  6. WoW! I just decided to use shotwell to use as my photo management tool and I’m impressed. Since it is really really fast and it’s possible to import photos and to view them simultaneously.
    Too bad I wasn’t able to import >20000 photos at once (the importer crashed while queuing the photos for the import (sorry I don’t have any debug output). So I have to import the photos in junks instead (but this isn’t a problem).
    great work guys.
