Yorba has released Shotwell 0.6.1, an update to our digital photo
manager. We would like to thank all of our bug testers and translators for their excellent work.
It is highly recommended that all users upgrade.
Major improvements since 0.5 include:
* Basic support for RAW images, including import support for all common formats like CR2 and DNG
* Full support for working with PNG images
* Users can now zoom into photos
* A new preferences dialog
* The ability to open photos in an external editor, such as the GIMP, from within Shotwell
* Photo tags and titles are imported automatically from XMP and IPTC
metadata
* A photo trash can
* Numerous bug fixes and improved language support

Why don’t support GIF images and other popular images formats like TIFF, BMP… ?
We’re planning on supporting those formats, we just haven’t gotten to them yet. 🙂
See the following tickets:
http://trac.yorba.org/ticket/2154 (BMP and GIF)
http://trac.yorba.org/ticket/601 (TIFF import)

Welcome update. I’m very impressed with Shotwell. It’s already very good and usable, with lots of future potential.
Zooming is welcome – I missed it in 0.5. I’d like to see an option/key to zoom to 1:1 pixels (often useful with 2 near identical shots, to work out which is sharpest and delete the other)
I’d like to see some more keyboard shortcuts, and/or a good list of them. I want to be able to navigate around my events easily without having to use the mouse.
I’d like an option to always view full screen…
Good job keeping it simple but snappy and useful!
Wonder if shotwell get NEF (nikon’s raw images) support. F-Spot haven’t such feature.
Good work guys.
Have you considered storing the database and the thumbnails where the photos themselves are stored. For example, in .shotwell directory in each directory that is part of the imported image collection.
This way it would be possible to easily copy or move images with their metadata. It would also make it easy to add removable collections (ie. usb hdd), which are present only when the device is connected. Also, sharing metadata with other users that have access to the photos would be automatic.
Not to mention what just happened to me when I renamed the directory that holds all my photos. It would be nice if there were a dialog where I could specify which directories are part of my collection.
Finally, I’m trying to keep my home directory small, so I can’t really import all those photos to the library by copying them – even the thumbnails take a lot of space for a large collection.
Yorba hello people, I love using linux since college I’ve used and viedo by chance on the project Gustov on web microsoft(http://blogs.msdn.com/b/stevecla01/archive/2010/03/03/microsoft-project-gustav.aspx)http://channel9.msdn.com/TechFest/Project-Gustav-Immersive-Digital-Painting/ of extra features to give the paint which I found fantastic as drawing with a brush, chalk, ie as a drawing canvas, my question is:
1. if heard about this project, have not thought of doing something similar or better
2. and if they do please I am ready to work
sorry my English is not so good hahahaha

James,
thanks for your comments. Shotwell already has a keyboard shortcut that zooms to 1:1 pixels: the “1” key. The documentation at http://trac.yorba.org/wiki/UsingShotwell0.6 mentions this and our other keyboard shortcuts as well.
Derek,
Shotwell can handle NEF images and all other RAW formats supported by the libraw library.
Percy,
thanks – I was not aware of Gustav. We’ll check it out!
It would be nice to have an option to create soft-links to original files, rather than making copies of them in the ~/Pictures directory. If that’s in a version newer than 0.5.2-1 (Fedora 13), then you can obviously ignore this request! Should only make copies if there is editing being done to the image from within shotwell.
(oops, pilot error, I overlooked the “copy to library directory” selection)
Nice job, this application is simple, fast, functional ,…
Perhaps, you could add somes simples functionnalities…
– possibility to create a rating for pictures and allow sorting by this criterium
– allow to select more than one tag to retreive pictures with more tags
…to be continued when ideas will raise !
Yorba,
Very cool to see Shotwell coming along! I find it the easiest of all the collection software to use.
The one request that I have, is for tags to be in a tree. It’s the one thing that F-spot has that could really enhance shotwell for me…
Having top-level categories like “Places, People, Locations”, etc, and then underneath having a tree of tags. I travel a lot, so I have a lot of pictures from different places, and several continents. Having a system where I can browse down by continent would be awesome!
Thanks again for making great software!
What a pretty good work you did, Yorba !
At last I found with Shotwell something that could replace the last window application I still use. I had never found under linux a photo management program that can seriously replace FotoAlbum (www.fototime.com). I think I have found one now and because these 2 applications use SQLite I think it will be simple to transfer informations. I’ll tell you !
If I may give suggestions for next versions :
. a right-click edit properties popup with Tabs to manage dates, keywords, title, comment and all editable EXIF/IPTC photot datas.
. a right click on events (on left screen) to choose between actual hierarchy presentation and recursive presentation : all photos of the clicked event and all after events are visible all together.
I’ll be pleased to follow Shotwell evolutions from the actual young project (v 0.6) to his brilliant future !
I have 3 systems connecting to a NAS drive for family photos. If I setup tags for all the photos within the folder, can I export/share my tag structure with the other two users viewing same photo folder or are the tags stored on the NAS drive so all instance of Shotwell will use the same tags?
Thanks
I have a very similar situation. I have multiple machines connected to the same NAS with all of my genealogy photos on the server. I want to be able to make many tags, in iptc/xmp format, so that they are accessible from all of my machines, plus I would like to be able to export them out to DVDs for all of my family to view and use the tags on their windows machines. Will Shotwell do this, or is there another program that will?
I agree with Goeland86.
The tags organized as tree is one of the reasons i used a photo organizing program in the first place.. F-Spot let me do it. Shotwell not. Also f-spot has the ability to assign images on tags. These two things are the reasons for me to use it.
Shotwell is really faster and i like it.. But I dont use it as i did with F-Spot. I just import my photos now (which does it faster) and i wait for these 2 features to be implemented. Then I will start using it for photo browsing 🙂
Thanks
+1
Currently the file import crashes the application when a .NEF file is located in the imported folder.
Hope this will get fixed soon.
This is a very intriguing post, I was looking for this knowledge. Just so you know I found your web site when I was searching for blogs like mine
