Fedora Core 2
Hurray, the upgrade from FC1 was as smooth as I could only dream of. Despite the fact that a lot of GNOME packages I had were not Fedora’s original ones (BTW, thanks to Matt Hall for his GNOME repository). Also, thanks to him again for the latest bunch of the shiny new GNOME packages for FC2.
Bad important news: x.org server is broken in FC2. There is missing link from xorg.xml to xfree86.xml – it causes problems for people having XkbRules “xfree86”.
Also, I recently discovered serious xkb problem with Accelerated X – it does not set XKB_RULES_NAMES. GNOME 2.6 simply NOT going to work with broken XKB implementations (while it should work without XKB at all – so just disable XKB if it is broken).
XKeyboardConfig
So, the announce of 0.1 is made. Now all we can do is wait for feedback from the communities.

Federico made a very good point (or rather list of points?). I think GNOME needs some process of certification – and the list of “good citizens”. Not all of them should be included into the official GNOME desktop (for obvious reasons) – but at least GNOME could point users/distromakers to the “recommended” applications.

XKeyboardConfig
Ugh. Yesterday uploaded xkeyboard-config 0.1 tarball. Drafted the announcement – and posted it to the private club xkb@listserv.bat.ru. If the guys approve it, tonight I will broadcast it. Scary thing – the very first release of the project:)

So it seems, the name for the XKB(xmodmap) configuration data project is found (courtesy of Ivan Pascal). It is going to be xkeyboard-config. Objections anyone? The release 0.01 is going to happen RSN.

I desperately need a name. Good sensible name for the project containing XKB configuration database (and potentially, in a future, xmodmap configuration database) – meta-project for X servers and/or distromakers. The release 0.01 is actually ready – but I need a name. Show me your creativity.

Hurray, Fedora Core 2 is out. I wonder when I have time to upgrade my not-so-old buddy Acer Travelmate 803…
Could anyone send me FC2 DVD please? 🙂

Well, at least now advogato is back. Good. Some stuff was waiting to be logged…
GNOME Control Center
Last week, another couple of bits in g-s-d finalized (hopefully) the code which detects XKB configuration changes (thanks to the person who did not distract me at that time:). Now user can sync his settings with the system configuration in just one click at the session startup.
Lads, it is time to talk over i18n and keybord capplets…

After the discussion on linux.org.ru, I looked at this stuff and was really impressed. This is “must have” for true Emacs lovers.

GNOME Control Center
Yesterday night hacking was successfull. Now gnome-settings-daemon can detect changes in the system xkb configuration – and warn user about it. The only problem is that someone English-speaking should give me proper (HIG-aware and usability-friendly) text for the warning message.
