n810: random rants
January 15, 2008 9:22 am hardware, maemoThe browser in OS2008 is a huge disappointment. It hangs after every couple of pages, only “kill process” helps. Is it me? Is it about adblock and greazemonkey extensions? I do not know… But at the moment my n810 can not be used for browsing at all 🙁
Regarding the built-in GPS – according to what I hear from various people, there are 2 sorts of devices – “good ones” and “bad ones”. The “bad ones” (like mine) take ages to establish the fix.
And the last (but not least) – the hardware keyboard does not allow to switch between Russian and English layouts. You can have either – but not both (welcome to the Control Panel if you want to change layout). What kind of usability is it? For the company located a couple of hundred kilometers from Russia, it is odd;) The on-screen keyboard is more usable for me ATM.

I’m guessing it’s the extensions (adblock probably): the new browser has been a mostly positive experience for me, less problems than with opera — and I use the browser a lot.

Hi,
I don’t own a n810, but I know a thing or two about GPS. Some models can be preset to a specific geographic region (often a country) to speedup initial fix. If badly set, it will slow down much that fix. Did you verify your GPS is set to the correct country (if applicable on the n810) ?

Jussi: thanks, I’ll try to get rid of the extensions and see whether it improves things.

Xav: I’ll check. But IIRC there is no such setting here.

Maybe you should think about Privoxy insted AdBlock, to kill banners and ads?

It seems disabling extensions does not really help:(

I just got my 810 yesterday. It came with v. 1.2007.42-19 of OS2008 and I haven’t installed any extra browser plugins. So far, I haven’t seen a crash, which is very pleasant, because the OS2007HE version I was running on my 770 would crash like crazy.
I wonder if it’s worth doing a backup and installing the latest (or one level back) OS image?
WRT GPS, I can’t get a fix inside my house, but if I go a few blocks away, it seems OK.
Now a question for you: which Map software have you chosen? Maemo-mapper is nice and free, but Map seems a bit more complete in some respects.

Michael: I am already thinking about downgrade. It seems the previous version was somewhat more stable.
I am using both apps. Mostly Map – since it has cool 3D view and some database of useful objects.

You can quick switch between Russian and English layouts for the keyboard.
In the control panel, first select the Russian keyboard layout. Then hit – while you’re typing to toggle between the Latin/Cyrillic modes of the keyboard. You can also insert single Latin/Cyrillic characters by holding and pressing the key you want.

Thomas: sorry, I did not quite get your advice. I am choosing Russian layout – but pressing ‘-‘ (the second key on the left from Return) does not change anything. Also, pressing and holding the button just creates a line of Russian characters;)

Hmm, I used angle brackets to specify the keys and it seems the blog ate them.
Anyway, the post is supposed to read:
“Then hit Ctrl-Chr while you’re typing”.

Tomas:
Thank you very much! It works! You really made my day;)

Honestly, my experience with the browser has been wonderful. It runs flawlessly. I only started to have problems like lag, after I installed some extensions. Even after “uninstalling” them, the problems were not fixed.
I had to completely rm -rf .mozilla in my home directory and then everything was perfect again. Give it a try, you might be surprised.
