The PiTiVi team is very proud to announce the first release in the unstable 0.13 PiTiVi series.
This release is in memory of those who have lost their lives, friends, houses in the April 6th 2009 earthquake in l’Aquila, Italy.
You will find more info of the changes, bugfixes and so forth in the online release notes here .
To sum up this release :
- 3 developers working mostly full time : Alessandro Decina, Brandon Lewis and myself
- An insane QA/usability nazifreak who has overwhelmed the bugtracker with issues : Jean-Francois Fortin Tam
- Over 700 commits !
- Complete core rewrite, new multi-layered timeline, audio waveforms, video thumbnails
- Speed improvements
This is not the end, far from it. We’re already working on the next 0.13.2 release which should be available just before the Gran Canaria Desktop Summit in July with exciting improvements like : transitions, mixing, effects, more speed/memory improvements…
People say an image is worth a thousand words… then I guess a video is worth a million words. Jean-Francois did a screencast showing off the latest features of PiTiVi… and of course edited it with PiTiVi. You can find it in ogg or on youtube. Thanks Jean-Francois !
Enjoy the Show !
Hi,
I just tried it (over a remote X session), and it died because of an X protocol error. I dunno how to debug that. Maybe I’ll try it locally when I have time.
Volevo soltanto ringraziare per questa dedica, grazie davvero.
english: Just wont to say thanks for this dedication. thanks a lot.
To all bloggers on all planets:
if you announce a new release of product xyz then describe with some short words what xyz is or what it does. I don’t now what PiTiTv is… I can guess it. You force me to go to the website of the product. But I won’t cos I’m pissed about you not explaining what PiTiTv is.
Brilliant! 🙂
I need to be able to set the aspect ratio in the project properties please. My HV20 shoots in 1440×1080, so I want to have the right resolution, but with 1.3333 aspect ratio. Common aspect ratios here:

Please implement it.
Rock on! I am just playing with today’s release and it seems that the basic infrasctucture is now quite solid. Looking forward to seeing additional features in the next releases. Thanks for all the work!
the work going on with pitivi is really exciting.
I think the new functionality being added now is really going to help pitivi fill a critical void in the open media ecosystem.

I guess you could count the number of frames in the video and multiply it by 1000 to get the number of words the video is worth.
Love the new look/feel. Really looking forward to effects/transitions. Adding nice text is a must have.
What a sweet release! Might be good to to some of the gtk+-interview editing with it. I’ll see what David “komputes” Bensimon thinks.
@Eugenia : please file that bug on the bugtracker : http://bugzilla.gnome.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=pitivi
@MacSlow : Most definitely ! PiTiVi is for *you*, the more feedback and feature requests we get, the better suited it will be for your use cases ! If we can make it the de-facto editor for FOSS conferences/interviews/screencast by the end of the year… I’d say we would have already filled in a big gap in the FOSS eco-system.
@all : thanks for your good comments ! 🙂
I love it.. It’s really coming along. I pulled the git repository down but sadly I can’t get the latest gstreamer stuff on my working pc. I think I’ll try setting up a VM to be a playground so that I can get back to trying to hack on it..
Not that I want to spoil the party, but, are there any plans for implementing undo functionality? Undo is always hard, because it is a “cross-section feature” which touches almost every aspect of the application, so you have to think of it early if you want to get it right.
It worries me a bit that Pitivi is growing bigger very quickly, and the larger it grows, the harder it will be to implement an adequate undo function. This would of course be a shame, because Pitivi is starting to look beautiful!
@Louise: 320 seconds * 29.97 fps * 1000 words/frame = 9 590 400. So we’re close to 10 million words 🙂
Are there any plans to add more options for encoding? — xvid and h.264 to be specific.
Also, I cannot seem to render my output to raw video and raw audio. Every time I choose these options it reverts back to options I have previously used.
