This year, LAS will be held in Barcelona, Spain from November 12th to 15th. Our Call for Participation (CfP) opens on July 31st, and will run until August 31st.
The Linux App Summit, formerly called the Libre Application Summit, is a conference focused on building a Linux application ecosystem. LAS aims to encourage the creation of quality applications, seek opportunities for compensation for FOSS developers, and foster a thriving market for the Linux operating system.
Previous iterations of this conference have been held in the United States, in Portland, Oregon, and Denver, Colorado. This year, Barcelona, Spain was chosen as the hosting location due to growing international interest.
Barcelona is known for embracing open source technology, and is a leader in driving open source technology at the government level. Barcelona is also known as one of the world’s most influential cities and a major touristic and cultural attraction. We are thrilled to have the first international version of the Linux App Summit hosted in Barcelona.
Venue
The conference will take place at Lleialtat Santsenca, a beautiful community space that hosts many meetups and conferences, and which has been featured in architectural articles due to the startling contrast between its art deco facade and its minimalist interior.
About the Summit
The core conference days will be held from November 12th – 14th. November 15th will be reserved for BoFs and hackathons since we want to encourage participants to collaborate. We hope participants will not only meet and talk about change, but also lead with results.
Everyone is invited to attend LAS, and there will be travel sponsorship available in order to make it a more inclusive event. Companies, journalists, and individuals who are interested in learning more about the Linux desktop application space and growing their user base are especially welcome.
Week of 9 September – Speaker notification begins.
12 to 15 November – LAS conference dates. There will be 3 core days and 1 day for BoFs and hackathons.
The organizing team, GNOME, and KDE, are excited about the possibilities of our combined influence to no longer sit passive, but to lead and plan for the future.
We hope you will join us in Barcelona. See you there!

We are very excited to share with you some of our best moments, achievements, and great conferences/events which happened throughout the year in our annual report.
Worth mentioning:
Two new releases, 3.28 and 3.30, with some great new features and support for Thunderbolt 3 connections with added security checks that are designed to prevent data theft. Many improvements have been added for configuring touchpads and Bluetooth devices.
The GNOME screen reading application, Orca, saw a significant amount of refinement. A large number of bugs were fixed. Orca now has better interaction with GNOME Shell, with improvements to performance, minimizing searches for unrelated labels, and many fixes for gnome-shell extensions.
GNOME moved to Gitlab: this was definitely one of of the most impactful transitions. With around 5344 opened issues, 9717 closed issues and 7085 merged requests merged Gitlab is now not only a code hub but also beneficial for the whole community as a project management tool used by engagement team, conference organization team, and Board of Directors and by other communities.
We count 15 unique event locations, 17 events, 7 conferences attended and 10 hackfests which GNOME organized and/or attended. 2018 brings memories of GUADEC in Almeria, LAS in Denver , GNOME ASIA in Taipei, and many other successful events.
Financially speaking two large donations were received in 2017 which is increased budget for events, hackfests, doubling of the funding for the Outreachy program, and hiring of new people in staff. Many thanks goes to our small donors and all companies that supports us in our mission.
GNOME had 15 students who successfully finished the Google Summer and two who successfully completed Outreachy internship by working in GNOME core applications, libraries, and new projects of Code internship by working in GNOME core applications, libraries, and new projects.
For more information and details please see the Annual Report .
2018 wouldn’t have been this awesome without you! Cheers and looking forward to coming years.

The GNOME and KDE communities are excited in their joint interest in co-hosting the Linux App Summit (LAS) this year, and are currently looking for locations for an event that is hosted sometime in September – December 2019.
The Linux App Summit is an evolution of the Libre Application Summit that was previously hosted by GNOME. The updated name reflects an interest in building new partnerships to create applications that target Linux desktops. By co-hosting the conference with KDE, GNOME hopes to create a space for more widespread collaboration and working towards a common goal: expanding the Linux application ecosystem.
If you would be interested in hosting LAS 2019, please send an email to appsummit@lists.freedesktop.org by May 15th with the potential location. This will allow the organizing committee to establish contact with you and lend assistance as you put together a bid later on.

Subjects that we’re particularly interested in include:
1- Application development and deployment 2- Privacy and security 3- Community building and diversity 4- Design of user and developer experiences 5- Use of GNOME technologies outside the desktop 6- Encouraging new contributors 7- Project organisation and governance 8- Use of GNOME by users
However, if there is another subject that you would like to talk about, we would still love to receive your submission. Talks can be either 25 or 40 minutes in length, which includes time for questions.
