Shotwell 0.12.0 Released!

Good evening, one and all,

It’s my pleasure to announce the release of Shotwell 0.12.0. This version represents several person months of hard work, saw us add our one-hundred-thousandth line of code, involved a quest that took our merry little band of adventurers half way around the world, three new brave warriors joining our party, and the slaying of many, many monsters.  It’s now more stable than ever before, has a neat new straightening tool, and, thanks to the watchful eyes, thorough bug reports and helpful suggestions of you, our userbase, it’s pure awesome (I admit there may be some bias on my part, but still…).

We’re proud of it, and on behalf of the team here, I sincerely hope you enjoy using it.

Cheers,
-c

Download a source tarball from the Shotwell home page at:
http://www.yorba.org/shotwell/

Or grab a binary for Ubuntu Oneiric at Yorba’s Launchpad PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~yorba/+archive/ppa

Ubuntu Precise will ship with Shotwell 0.12.x pre-installed by default, so Precise users will be upgraded to Shotwell 0.12.0 automatically as part of their regular software update cycle.

  1. Congrats and thank you for the huge work!
Shotwell 0.12.0 is already available in Mageia 2 preRC and it will replace f-spot in Mageia 2.

  2. THAAAAAANK YOU ALL.

I’ve waited for 0.12 and now it will be with precise. Thank you all.

Almost everyday starts and ends with shotwell. Over 20.000 pictures in and so happy =)

    Cheers
    Marc

    1. Hi Alexander,
Unfortunately, the map widget didn’t make it into this release; however, as we’ll soon be thinking about what should go into 0.13 and beyond, we’ll definitely take your interest in this into consideration.

  3. Hello!! Since v. 0.12 when I try to open an image for light editing (crop basically) I get this error:

“Error loading UI file /usr/share/shotwell/ui/direct_context.ui: Falló al abrir el archivo «/usr/share/shotwell/ui/direct_context.ui»: No existe el archivo o el directorio”

    From Google Translator:

“”Error loading UI file / usr / share / Shotwell / ui / direct_context.ui: Failed to open file” / usr / share / Shotwell / ui / direct_context.ui ‘: No such file or directory ”
Please, could you help me? Light editing with Shotwell Viewer is very useful for me.

I apologize if here it isn’t the correct place but I’ve tried to open a bug in Launchpad’s page but I can’t so I post here.

    Thank you very much!!

    1. Hi Albert,
Due to an error on our part, the .ui file in question got left out of the package. Upgrading to 0.12.1 should fix this, though.

  4. Only thing is it gives problems with:

shotwell: error while loading shared libraries: libgexiv2.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

    but:
libgexiv2-0 is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded.

    Version of the library: 0.4.0-0oneiric1

    1. Hi,
Unfortunately, there was an SONAME conflict with the version of gexiv2 we posted to our PPA. This should have been fixed by 0.4.1, though; can you try again and let us know if it’s working as intended?

  5. Any plans on adding lensfun support, or has anyone written a lensfun plugin? Many new cameras, for example the micro four thirds EVIL cameras from Olympus and Panasonic rely heavily on software to correct geometric distortions in the lenses. This means RAW files often have lots of distortion when viewed in Shotwell. With lensfun support, all this correction could be done automatically by shotwell.

    1. Yes, we’ve discussed lensfun in the past, and have an open ticket on adding lensfun support. We considered implementing this a while ago, but ultimately ran out of time. (As always, we’re happy to take patches!)

FYI, Shotwell’s plugin system currently only supports publishing. We’d love to expand it someday though.

  6. I’m running a newer version of Shotwell (included in Ubuntu Precise Beta 2) and I find it disgusting that killer features as cropping are not available now. Is it a calling to bring back Gimp to do light editing? Shotwell used to be perfect for that.

    1. Hi,

I just installed the version found in the Precise repositories (0.12.1), and, as far as I can tell, all the editing tools appear to function correctly, including cropping. Can you tell us more about the problems you’re encountering by sending an email to shotwell@yorba.org? We’d be happy to help you.

One thing to note, though: some of the editing tools are intentionally disabled with very small images; is it possible that this is tripping you up?
