GUADECs

I’m back from guadec-es. I enjoied it very much, with very high level talks and a perfect organization. Besides the techincal stuff, they organized a impressive “social program” with tipical dinners, visits, live folk music, etc…

Fer and Fer
Here is my presentation Accesibilidad en GNOME: Estado y futuro about a11y status and future work from a es_ES point of view. I’ll upload my slides from GNOME-love talk as soon as I guess how to edit presentation backgrounds with OOo 2.0 Beta.

Now it’s time for GUADEC 6. Don’t miss our GNOME-love tutorial!

Miguel: nice to hear that you love now Nina Simone. I discovered her some years ago with the “Quiet Songs” album. Sinnerman (a 10 minutes rapsosy over a spiritual), Mr Bojangles, Ne me quitte pas (the best cover of Brel song), Summertime (another great cover), etc…

EESTEC Congress

This Monday the XIX EESTEC Congress is begining. Is’s going to be a big, funny and interesting event for ever participant. It’s organized by my good friends of Eurielec, an student association which I’m still member of. I’m afraid I’ve not been able to help with the organization, but I had no time for it.

In the night scene, this week I went back to “cien por cien”, classic pub in Madrid night, playing only Spanish music. Also this week I got another email from a reader that found a web page by me about Madrid night pub and discos. This is a funny story. When I came to Madrid in 1996 I quickly discovered lot of interesting places for going out. Most of my friends in the college were very boring about going out, going every night to the same 3 or 4 boring places, so I decided to write down an article listing the best places tfor going out. We plublished that article in our paper fanzine and it became very popular, and most of my friends began to condired me as a “pub and discohuman database”. Some years later, my friend Ismael Olea was organazing an Hispalinux congress and asked me for a guide for Madrid night. After some time I realized that I had been receiving lot of emails of people asking for places or suggestions for going out, or asking for a job as DJ in a disco. I checked, and if you search “Madrid de noche” in google that article was presented as the 5th result. During the last years I’ve been receiving lot of funny, courious and interesting emails about that. The problem with it is that it is very old and outdated. One my pending projects is to set up a pretty interactive web page with all this information I know 🙂

New Opera Tenors

During last years opera fans have been very worried about the voice crissis. The situation was dramatic in the tenor voice. Most of great tenors (like Domingo, Carreras, Pavarotti) were becoming older or dying (like my beloved Kraus) without any possible substitute. Classical music labels tried to launch new stars, like Jos

Little Hacks

GNOME: During the “boring” GNOME 2.10 freeze I’ve been done little and funny hacks:

Work: In the other side, lot of work at Tecsidel but great work. We are making a “dream team” and very interesting stuff.

Shopping: Some days ago, I was sad, and tried big shopping action therapy: Paul Smith socks, towel and perfum; Exte pants; Moschino shirt; D&G bag; Amaya Arzuaga jersey… but the thing that made me happier was a present I got for my birtday (that is this Sunday): a cocktail shaker. I bought then some martini glasses and:

  • 30 ml Vodka
  • 20 ml Triple Sec
  • 10 ml lime juice
  • 15 ml Cranberry juice
  • … shake with ice and strain into a chilled glass
    • …and you have a Cosmopolitan.

And last, but not least, Madrid night is not so dead. Lot of funny nights with lot of friends:

Feature requests by email

Recently I’ve got some feture requests for GNOME apps via email. Sometimes I forget them, like the one from Eugenia asking for some changes to gnome-keyring-manager. I didn’t made those, because we (mostly James Bowes) are rewriting gnome-keyring UI. But that remebered me a request from Nicolas Rucks asking for gaim ellipsizing buddy names in the buddy list window. Here is the simple (two lines) patch. Notice that I coded it from bed (wireless keyboard and LargePrint theme) because I have a contracture in my neck.

Muine and eina

After I released yesterday the muine lyrics plugin my friend Eru told me that today eina, the other cool GNOME music player, has just got a lyrics plugin:

It is cooler than mine, because it implents selection of right lyrics when various results are available. Damm! and better UI. So I need to update/improve the muine one :). Now, following the “one day, one feature” sentence, I proposed them a little contest: a karaoke plugin, using EvilLyrics files. I’m very tired now to code anything, and tomorrow I have a busy day (Opera with Juan Diego Florez included!), but maybe Miguel would be able to sing his favourite songs in some days (and his neighbours will hate us).

Oh, I think that eina should be included in FC4 because is a really good player and has no the mono dependency (that seems that Red Hat doesn’t want to add to Fedora)
