  • Movie (My Fair Lady): Where the devil are my slippers? Finally got our first movie from Netflix. It’s a pretty good service, though I’d like to see what the turnaround is before I renew it. I had forgotten how much I liked this musical, though I think it ends on a somewhat flat note (by modern standards, anyway.) Anyway, the DVD had a track with Audrey Hepburn’s voice on it. She obviously wasn’t as strong a singer, but it seemed to fit her character more (at least in the song they had — “Wouldn’t it be Loverly”.) Anyway, I think I’d like to see the whole thing with her singing someday. Maybe they’ll rerelease such a version…

  • Meetings: Eazel guys came to visit this morning. It was good to talk to them again, though I’ll prolly see at least Darin and Maciej again at GUADEC. We ate lunch at the blue Indian restaurant where much nerding took place. It started raining on the way back, and Bud impressed everyone with his foresight by pulling out an umbrella. It was very cold rain.

  • Hacking: Got very little done today with the meetings and all. I did fix some annoying sizing code during one of the slow parts of the meeting. That was pretty nifty.

  • Dinner: Went to Joe’s Crab Shack with Zana. I read a story in a book of short stories (“Interpreter of Maladies” by Jhumpa Lahiri) about an Indian woman who went to the beach and had Fried Clams with lots of Tobasco sauce. So Zana and I had plates of fried stuff. While there, all the waiters/waitresses/hosts did this odd dance routine and sang lots of songs. I’m glad we don’t do this at Red Hat. On the way home, we stopped at bn for books and coffee. Dangerous place; I bought the Diamond Age and a book by Jostein Gaarder, who also wrote Sophie’s World. Oh, and that book on Quidditch as a spur of the moment purchase.

  • Rain: The rain sucks. My roof leaks. I need to get this fixed tomorrow.

  • Hacking (AisleRiot2): Did work on masks. I also realized I’m going to have to do this an inefficient way, in order to get the antialiased effect correct. I wonder if there’s anything wrong with having a widget with shaped windows as it’s window.

  • Food (dinner): Mama Dips with Zana, Havoc, Amy and Owen. I had fried catfish bones with some meat attached. Eating was an adventure.

  • Beer: Got a bad bottle of New Castle tonight. It is making me sick. )-:

  • Boomers: A friend of mine had a really bad day. He has a cool website though: http://www.bitwaste.com/

Fri 16 Mar 2001

  • Dates: Yesterday was pi day. Zana and I celebrated by watching Pi, and Eating Pie (peach and sweet potato). Today was the Ides of March. We watched ‘the Cell’, which was better than I thought it was going to be (and had heard.)

  • Hacking (GtkTreeView): Did more work on keyboard navigation. Put up a screenshot here: http://webwynk.net/~jrb/files/halmark.png

  • Hacking (piano): My Mussorgsky finally arrived. I am indeed a hack.

  • Laptop: My laptop arrived!!!! Woo hoo hoo. Repartitioned it to add a wintendo partition, but it mostly works. Then I tried to install network drivers for the pcmcia card I have for Windows. That was a total disaster. I think I’ll have to reinstall it tomorrow. It was nice getting a laptop from dell to arrive with RH7 preinstalled though.

  • Laptop (ximian): Tried installing ximian GNOME last night. Somehow, it downloaded a bad gimp-devel package, which then put the install in an infinite loop (apparently it spent all night reinstalling the same 120 packages or so.) This morning, nothing gnome related would work. A ‘rpm –rebuilddb’ and a ‘rpm -Uvh –force /var/cache/helix-install/*rpm’ seems to have fixed it all up, but it was pretty bizarre.

  • Games (alpha centauri): Stupid game… Eating up all my evening like that.

  • food (lunch): Went with Zana for Sushi. I’ve never had warm sushi before. I don’t think sushi is supposed to be warm. I don’t think I’ll be going back there any time soon.

  • Eazel: That sucks. I hope most of you guys will be able to get another job soon, and those who were starting to feel part of the GNOME community will still feel welcome.

  • hacking (AisleRiot): I finally bugged itp enough to make him make a gnome-games release. Next, I need to bug him to capitalize AisleRiot correctly…

  • hacking (AisleRiot2): you can now move cards onto slots, and reveal hidden cards. Next — animations.

  • hacking (GtkTreeView): Spent the day fixing a bunch of little bugs, and talking to TimJ about how to handle values better. Other then that, I’m basically down to two big API changes left in the tree — the sort model rewrite, and the focus changes. I should be done with both by GUADEC.

  • food (dinner): Went to the Carolina Coffee house and had a very flat beer. The waiter never refilled Zana’s sweet tea either. Normally the food is better then that. Disappointing.

  • car: My car seems to be falling apart. I need to get it cleaned and serviced sometime soon.

Fri 09 Mar 2001

  • cooking: Made Quesadillas for dinner with homemade guacamole. It was yummy, despite the fact that Food Lion sold me cheese past its expiration date.

  • hacking: Spent too much time playing Fortress and not enough time working on it these last coupla days. I need to put some serious effort in it this weekend.

  • Nothing: Dang is it loud. Definately need noise mufflers or something…

  • hacking (GtkTreeView): Had a very productive day avoiding working on the keyboard navigation code. Fixed a lot of small bugs that have need doing for a while. I’ll get back to navigation tomorrow.

  • Table Tennis: Owen is getting better at this game faster then I am. Time to put in some extra training time.
