Foresight 0.8.2 ready!

Tonight we got 0.8.2 cooked up and ready to go. Those of you already on Foresight, make sure conary is updated and sudo conary update group-dist. I hope to have ISOs up soon.

There will be an official announcement when the ISOs are ready, but here is a brief low down:

  • Many packages updated, I estimate about 450.
  • Banshee is the new default Music Library/Player
  • Removed the full Mozilla suite in favor of just firefox
  • Broke the distro down into manageable groups (not a visible change, but lots of work)
  • And so much more that I can’t think of at 1AM

Many thanks to the Foresight Team for making this come together…. I will post more when there ISOs are released.

Google Talk

I am sure there will be many posts about this… but I don’t care 🙂

All I can say is “You go Google!”. Google has a real talent for offering high quality (and useful) services and they get the right kind of PR. Finally found a use for my Gmail account that I never use. The new Google Talk service uses gmail accounts for IM. Also, this will probably really make me use jabber more, Gaim was a breeze to get online. I just wish I could use it for voice communications. I will look forward to Gizmo for that, I guess.

So, my gmail is kvandine AT gmail DOT com… feel free to say hi 🙂

SysReport RPM available

As much as I believe everyone should be using conary based distros (preferrably Foresight), I did package SysReport as an rpm for those Fedora and Red Hat folks. Enjoy!

Get it here!

SysReport 0.0.3 released

I created a tool to generate system reports that are useful for rebuilding for disaster recovery or just managing your environment. The reports generated is in an xml format, and should be easy to navigate. Currently it collects some basic system info and list packages, versions, and labels installed. Future plans include adding network interface info, nsswitch settings, local accounts and groups, and more. The goal being to generate enough info that the system can be restored to a sane state. Currently supports conary based systems, red hat, and fedora currently with plans to support debian and ubuntu soon.

There will eventually be some additional tools for mining the reports. Queries, doing diffs, etc.

Requires: Mono

Sharp Musique and Sonance

I just bought my first batch of music from iTunes without itunes. Worked well, Sharp Musique is working pretty well. I also converted the songs to ogg and imported to Sonance, which makes a great player. It can now even burn Audio CDs 🙂

On a slightly related note, Sonance is now the default player for Foresight Desktop Linux

Schwinn Stingray

So Ashlyn has out grown her first trike, well maybe not outgrown but ready for a new one. She has a Radio Flyer with and push bar so we can push her around. She loves it… but she doesn’t pedal really pedal it. In looking around, she picked out a chopper style bike. Hopped on and just started to pedal. She did really well on it and thought is was quite cool. She doesn’t really understand steering yet. It is called the Schwinn Stingray. I will look forward to seeing her on it after christmas. She was sooooooooooo cute!

Schwinn Stingray

Laurie didn’t really want to buy it for her now, thought it would be a good “Santa” gift. So, we bought her another Radio Flyer trike.
