We have docs!

I was really struck by a comment in this review of Foresight.

The nice thing about it though, is that its well documented and the Foresight Linux wiki has loads of documentation included.

I can’t take any credit for the docs, there have been some new members of the team that have really been doing a great job on these. And there will be more real soon, including screencasts explaining usage of some of the default apps.

Check out some of the work done by Paul Cutler, Thilo Pfennig, Paul Scott-Wilson, Antonio Meireles, and others. Many thanks and keep up the great work!

Affinity… very slick!

So Paul got affinity packaged up for Foresight today, I have to say I am impressed! Compliments avant-window-navigator nicely… keep up the great work!

They both require compiz to be enabled, but so worth it. To try it:

sudo conary update avant-window-navigator affinity

You can add affinity to your panel as an applet, and avant is available in the menu (Applications->Accessories->Avant Window Navigator)

New GDM theme

Thanks to Stef’s excellent work, we have a new default GDM theme. The old one has served us well, but it is time for a change. Thanks Stef, great work!

Dell to ship Linux desktops

This is good news, Dell plans to ship pre-install linux destops.

They haven’t announced which distro yet, I wonder who I need to buy a beer to get them to select Foresight Linux as the default 😀

OpenOffice or not…

We are back to this question… A while back I got pressured into making Foresight default to OpenOffice.org instead of GNOME Office. Now it is really time to re-evaluate that decision. Our version of OpenOffice doesn’t include any translations. And it turns out that if we did include them all it would be just to big. About 1.2G. As a distro we ship all locales of everything, which is very important to us. Other distros deal with it by allowing you to install language packs. So by default you get english and you can add the language you care about after install. Don’t get me wrong, we will probably be forced to go that route too. However, maybe it is time for us to default to GNOME Office (since we are a GNOME distro) and just provide OpenOffice as a addon. I know this would make me happy! However, I am sure I will get flamed for this… office suite selection seems to be such a sore spot for people.

I would welcome feedback on this, send a mail to our mailing list with your comments.

Beryl meet Compiz… we all win!

Great news, Beryl is merging with Compiz. Of course they are retaining the right to fork again 🙂

GNOME Live Images torrent

The GNOME 2.18 Live Demos are now available on http://torrent.gnome.org, enjoy!

On a related note… that site has a GNOME LiveCD graphic, anyone want to do one that is more generic that would be suited for the multiple demo types? If so… let me know!

GNOME 2.18 Live Demos

I am very pleased to announce the GNOME 2.18 Live Demos, and even more excited to be providing them as official GNOME. These are designed to showcase the new GNOME as well as Foresight Linux. The Live Demos are provided in many formats, VMware, QEMU, Microsoft Virtual PC, and LiveCD. The LiveCD is actually still 2.17.92, but I expect to have a new one available tomorrow with 2.18.
