Ganyard Hill Farm

Went to Ganyard Hill Farms today. Wonderful day for it, love this weather. Ashlyn had a blast, climbing, jumping, and crawling in the hay. She didn’t spend nearly as much time with the animals this year, but couldn’t stop talking about the tractor that was pulling us on the hay ride. Spent plenty of money on decorations and other fall like things… Most of it will be in the trash in 2 weeks, but we will surely enjoy it until then.

I would highly recommend Ganyard Hill Farms for anyone with kids. We have gone two years now, and it have enjoyed it.

rBuilder, I love it!

Well, I can finally talk about how we build our ISOs for Foresight. rPath has a great tool (beta) called rBuilder. Think of rBuilder as a SourceForge like service for Linux distros. It provides me the tools to manage the Foresight Linux distro.

Now, many have asked why we renamed our label from conary.foresightlinux.com@fl:desktop to foresight.rpath.org@fl:desktop. The short answer is rBuilder. We are using rBuilder, when the distro first started rBuilder didn’t exist. Now that it does, so to really fit into the rPath model we needed to rename.

Many thanks to the folks at rPath, they have truely create amazing tools that make Foresight happen. They have also really gone the extra mile to help us. Foresight is the first derived distro, so we really had many bugs to work out. I really hope we provide some real value back to them as well!

Also, a big congrats to all the hard working guys that made rBuilder what it is… and what it will be! Great job!

0.9.0 -> 0.9.0.1

I had mentioned a small bug in 0.9.0 that made us create 0.9.0.1 ISOs. The issue is related to renaming our conary label. It was conary.foresightlinux.com@fl:desktop, we renamed it foresight.rpath.org@fl:desktop. The ISO contained changesets with both labels. This causes problems updating past 0.9.0. To update 0.9.0 installations to the latest:

$ wget http://www.foresightlinux.com/downloads/rename-foresight-fix
$ cp /var/lib/conarydb/conarydb ~/conarydb.backup #backs up the db just in case :)
$ sudo python rename-foresight-fix
$ sudo conary update group-dist tomboy

Foresight 0.9.0 released with GNOME 2.12

Well, we did it… released Foresight Desktop Linux 0.9.0 on GNOME 2.12 release day. Been such a crazy week, that I haven’t had a chance to blog about it. Looks pretty good, and am quite excited about it. Here is why:

  • New default music library/player, Banshee.
  • GNOME Power Manager
  • Updated Udev, Hal, DBus, and GNOME Volume Manager… I can plug in my USB stick and nautilus opens… makes me happy
  • Of course I am excited about the latest GNOME 🙂
  • GNOME Sudoku, need I say more?
  • Grub splash image, no more ugly black screen in the boot manager

And, not so distro related… we have a new website design, looks great! Thanks Jon!
