Firstboot

Pretty frustrated still, can’t duplicate the damn firstboot bug that so many people have witnessed. The going theory is a race condition between starting X and firstboot starting. The painful part is we rely on firstboot, and it fails for some people. I have tried to duplicate it more times than I can count and can’t. I just finished installing on the fastest box I can get my hand on, dual 3.2 GHz xeon… firstboot started as it should… I just wanted to scream. If anyone can duplicate the problem and get me any info… logfiles… tracebacks on console…any info… it would be appreciated!

Family of 4+2

The reality just really settled in, we are a family of 4… WOW! And of course if you count Fuzzy the dog, and Sneezy the cat… that is 6, or I prefer 4+2. That is a pretty full house. It has it’s tough times… of course… but it is also pretty amazing. I have a wonderful family!

Andrew Kenneth…

Andrew (Drew) Kenneth VanDine was born April 28th, 12:22am… vitals: 8 lbs, 3 ozs, 20 1/2 inches long and healthy. He was seriously jaundice for a few days and had to spend most of his time under some UV lights. All is well now, Laurie is recovering and we are all over tired these days ;-). I will post some pictures soon, for now here is a teaser.

Drew

Looks like a future Foresight user 🙂

Baby is coming…

If we don’t go into labor between now and Tuesday, we are going to begin induction. So, we are going to the hospital Tueday evening after Ashlyn goes to bed to begin the induction process. So, if all goes well, we will have a healthy baby boy sometime Wednesday, April 27th. It would be even better if we went into labor sooner… we’ll see. Either way we will have a baby soon…

New release

Foresight Desktop Linux 0.8 is now available. It has been alot of work, been beating on Anaconda most of the week. This release includes some nice artwork, many thanks to Jon for his contributions. Anaconda has had a face lift, it looks great. We also have added a nice bootsplash, I am very pleased with the look. We have also made some significant strives in hardware detection/automounting. Applied some patches to hal/udev/gnome-volume-manager and libgphoto. Things work very well now. I can now plug in my camera and gtkam pops up and asks me to import my photos, sweet! Plug in my usbstick and it mounts it and opens a nautilus window. Pop in an audio CD, goobox pops up and starts playing. It all just works, I love it!

Download, play, kick the tires, report bugs, and enjoy.

Update

Been a while since I have had time to write… There is much todo when you are expecting a baby so soon.

Update:

Foresight 0.8 is nearing completion, and should be pretty nice. We have updated many things and included a few more cool apps. We have also offically chosen a logo, so there will be more identity in this release. The anaconda installed has been updated to make the installs faster… and look much nicer :-). We have also incorporated a nice bootsplash theme into FDL, it looks great, imho.

There has also been allot of work on oversite, completely rewritten in python as well as an included gui.

You can probably expect a release of 0.8 within a week… and it will be worth the wait 🙂

Baby coming soon!

I really feel like the baby is coming soon, my prediction is about 2 weeks early. So, about 2 weeks from now. Getting very excited to have a son, so we will have one of each 🙂 It will be strange to have such a small baby in the house, seems like a lifetime ago when Ashlyn was so small.

Two big things I hope to accomplish before the baby comes, liveCD and FDL 0.8. The liveCD is the bigger of the two. Foresight has been tested pretty well now, so releasing 0.8 won’t be that big of a deal. Plus, I now have lots of help… The Foresight community has really grown and is functioning well… I expect excellent things in the near future!

Growing community

Had our first logo submission, looks cool.

Jonathon's logo 1

Also, did lots of work on getting udev, hal, and gnome-volume-manager to play well. Looks pretty good, I think.

Lots of other “tweaks” in the distro in general, probably getting close to needing a new release 🙂

The Foresight community is really growing, which is really exciting. We have seen a pretty significant increase in traffic to the site and a ton of downloads. Also the mailing list and irc is getting used, as well as real contributions from the community. I want to thank everyone that has helped out… and definately want to encourage the continued contributions and also any new contributors. Thanks!
